Travelers visiting many tropical, sub-tropical and developing countries run an increased risk of suffering a gastrointestinal illness. These are usually caused by bacteria, parasites and viruses. The microscopic bugs at the top of these rather gut wrenching (for all the wrong reasons...) charts are E Coli, the staphylococci, shigella and salmonella species, campylobacter jejuni, cryptosporidiosis, and hepatitis A.
Infected food is the biggest culprit, with water coming in second. Ice cream, cocktails served in re-used coconut shells, raw seafood, ice, and food from street vendors are potential risks that can interrupt your adventure with less salacious memories to pass on to family and friends.
The nausea, stomach cramps and diarrhea from such acute infections usually sorts itself out after a few days (unless of course you have contracted hepatitis A, or something like giardia). Certainly, if you are unlucky enough to be sick after a few days, you should see a doctor.
Fortunately, there are remedies you can take that will strengthen your immune and digestive system and hopefully give your body a better chance at dealing with its new environment. The herbs I describe below would make an excellent travelers mix. The best form to take them in would be as a tincture, which can be made up by going to a local herbal dispensary if you have one in your area, or alternatively, a local herbalist.
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)Astragalus is a good anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-microbial. The polysaccharides in it support the immune system. Astragalus increases the activity of phagocytes, natural killer cells, and the levels of antibodies in the blood.
Picrorrhiza (Picrorrhiza kurroa)This is an Ayurvedic herb that is best given in low doses, as higher doses can cause diarrhea and flatulence in more sensitive people. Its a bitter herb, so it stimulates the digestive system. It is also anti-malarial, supports the immune system, and protects the liver. Picrorrhiza encourages all aspects of the immune system, such as B and T cell activity, and the activity of phagocytes. This herb is used in Ayurvedic medicine for liver related problems and immune problems.
Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis)Goldenseal is a gut antibiotic, which for example helps reduce adhesive e coli, and encourages some immune functions of the body. For example, berberine, which is one of its active constituents, has been shown to increase the activity of macrophages, which digest bacteria and viruses. Barberry also contains berberine, so more information on this very valuable constituent is below. Goldenseal, being a bitter herb, it is also good for the digestive system. If you are pregnant or suffer from hypertension, however, you should not take goldenseal.
Barberry (Berberis Vulgaris)Berberine, one of the active constituents in this herb is an anti protozoic, which helps protect travelers against giardia, leishmania, and treponema pallidum. Other notable effects of berberine are its activity against giardia, dysentery, and candida, as well as the cholera vibrio. The active constituents berberine and palmatine are also anti-bacterial. And berbamine, which like berberine is an alkaloid, is a strong anti-bacterial which seems to work by increasing white blood cells and platelets. The constituent palamtine is a uterine stimulant, however, and as such pregnant women shouldn't take this herb. Barberry is another gut antibiotic, but it is also anti-malarial (though no self-respecting herbalist would recommend anything other than doctor's treatment if you do contract malaria).
Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea or augustifolia)Echinacea is an immune stimulant. Its main active constituents are the polysaccharides and the alkamides (especially the isobutylamides), which are both immune stimulating, and the polyaceytlenes, which are antibacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. Echinacea supports the activity of phagocytes, which are part of the immune system, and is also considered anti-viral and anti-microbial. One of the ways echinacea appears to work is by inhibiting the action of the enzyme hyaluronidase. This enzyme is used by micro-organisms to break down the connective tissue that prevents them from entering and spreading through the body. For these reasons, it is excellent as part of a travelers remedy mix.
These remedies are not designed as a prophylactic, like a vaccine. They work on the principle of giving your body an increased chance at staying healthy. But nothing replaces common sense. Wash your hands before eating. Don't drink ice or from water bottles where the seal has been broken. Drink cocktails in glasses, not cute but probably old coconut shells. Don't eat anything fresh that you can't peel. Don't eat ice cream or drink unpasteurized milk. Be wary of eating from street vendors. Some people do, and are fine. But they are a risk factor with gastrointestinal upsets. Its a good idea to pack some oral hydration salts as a precaution.
But above all, enjoy your holiday!

The first thing I want to point out is that everyone's body is different. Wouldn't it be boring and bizarre if we were all the same :) So the suggestions I am giving are what has, and has not, worked for me.
I have had what is commonly referred to as puffy eyes or bags under the eyes since I was 26; I am now a 34 year old male in very good shape. I've always taken pride in my appearance, so when I started to have daily baggy eyes, it became a concern to me. Naturally, I searched the internet for resources and suggestions. Most of the one's I found said to try putting ice cubes, cucumbers, tea bags, steak or a cold spoon on the problem area. I even came across a couple of suggestions to try Preparation-H :) I have read that the Preparation-H suggestion was actually dangerous, so don't try that.
Which of these worked and which one's didn't? I should also note that I have tried a number of inexpensive, as well as expensive, creme's that are supossed to help puffy eyes. These creme's are usually found at pharmacies and online health and beauty websites. None of these creme's helped me one bit. What has worked best for me is tea (black tea) bags.
What you do is boil water and put 2 tea bags in like you would if you were going to make tea. After brewing for 5 minutes, take the tea bags out...ring out the liquid...and now put them in the freezer. You need to have them cool, but not frozen. I say keep them in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Now lay down and apply the tea bags over the puffy areas under your eyes.
I try to leave them on for 15 minutes, turning them over 1/2 way through. After, make sure you rinse off any residue with a cold damp tissue or face cloth.
I find this has helped reduce puffiness, but is no cure. I am strongly considering seeing a certified Plastic Surgeon to get a professional opion on how to more permanently get rid of the excess fat under my eyes.

Acid Reflux: Cause and Natural Remedies

Natural stomach acid is in your stomach for a reason. The actual acid is not the cause of acid reflux disease. It is not a nasty poison that someone put there. The acid breaks down foods and sorts them out into the right department so to speak. Proper digestion depends on the presence of adequate stomach acid while you are eating.
When you eat, food moves from the mouth through the esophagus and into the stomach to be digested. At the end of the esophagus, there is a band of muscles that open and allow the food to go into the stomach. It then closes to prevent the food and acid from coming back up into the esophagus. Many people experience acid reflux when foods or digestive juices escape the stomach and come back up through the esophagus.
To make sure your stomach has enough acid at mealtimes, make sure you chew your food thoroughly. Getting saliva mixed into the food as you chew will get the digestion process off to a good start.
Snacking throughout the day causes the stomach to pump out acid gradually instead of saving it for mealtimes when it is needed the most. It is best to not eating closer than three hours apart. For example - if you eat breakfast at six a.m. and lunch at twelve p.m. then a snack at nine a.m. would be fine.
Next, make sure you do not drink too much liquid while eating a meal. Too much liquid dilutes the necessary acid in the stomach. The best policy is to drink a glass of water 30 minutes to one hour before or after your meal, with only a few ounces consumed during the meal. After you have eaten, one hour or two feel free to guzzle down all the pure natural water you want.
Another cause of acid reflux comes from eating large meals. This increases pressure on the stomach causing the stomach contents to be forced out and up into the esophagus. You will need to give your body at least two hours to digest your food properly. In addition, never ever lie down immediately after eating a large meal.
To avoid overproduction of acid eat smaller portions of food at each meal. It would also help a lot to eliminate any fried food or food that contains refined sugar, or caffeine.
Obesity can also increase abdominal pressure, and your risk of suffering from acid reflux as well. If you are overweight, cutting back on the amounts of food that you eat at each meal, and exercising daily should put you on the right path to helping you shed a few pounds.
Acid reflux is caused in some people when the sphincter muscle at the end of the esophagus becomes weak or does not close correctly. Prescription drugs, certain foods, alcohol, and smoking have been known to weaken the sphincter muscles.
Try not to use antacids since they cut down the acids you will need when you eat. Without enough acid, your stomach is unable to do its job of breaking down the food into the various nutrient components.
Inadequate digestion of proteins can cause the liver to increase production of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which is the bad cholesterol that does the most damage to your body.
Instead of taking antacids, try the following natural approach. If you still have sour stomach in between meals try eating something that will settle it without triggering more acid production such as sauerkraut. Your stomach should relax after eating sauerkraut in five to ten minutes.
The benefits of natural solutions are they normally cost a lot less, but even more important is the fact that natural solutions are a healthier alternative. They tend to reduce the possibility of becoming dependant on addictive chemical drugs.
There are also three herbs that are well known for soothing stomach muscles, which are chamomile, gentian, and ginger. If your problem does not respond successfully to natural remedies within a few days, please see your health care provider.

As the world braces itself for a potential pandemic of avian flu in the near future, people everywhere are wondering what they can do to protect themselves. As we all saw during the flooding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, we cannot expect the government to handle a widespread emergency effectively. There are only small stores of Tamiflu available, and its effectiveness during a bird flu pandemic is questionable. While conventional medicine does not offer a lot of options for treating viruses, certain natural remedies are known to have antiviral effects. These remedies have often been used for centuries with little or no side effects. There are means we can learn about now in order to empower ourselves in case of an epidemic. These remedies can also be useful for the common flu we deal with each year.
During the last flu pandemic in 1918, India lost 18 million people to influenza. The herb that was credited with ending the epidemic in India at that time was andrographis paniculata. Andrographis has traditionally been used in China and India for viral and respiratory infections. Its effectiveness is being borne out by modern research. The andrographolides in this herb can enhance immune system function. It can increase the production of white blood cells, activate the lymphatic system, and stimulate the production of interferon by cells in the body. Interferon kills viruses and also stops their growth. This herb can help our own immune system fight against viruses more effectively. Andrographis is frequently combined with Siberian ginseng to increase its immune enhancing effects. This herb has been shown to be effective in fighting bacterial and viral pneumonia, which are complications that often follow the flu or a cold.
Another herb that has traditionally been used to treat viral conditions is isatis. It was commonly used in Asia recently during the outbreak of SARS (Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome) that they experienced. It is also used for people with other viral conditions, such and AIDS, and hepatitis C.
A commonly used herb here in the United States, elderberry, has antiviral effects, making it useful to treat colds and flus. Elderberry prevents viruses from latching on to the cells in our body, making it difficult for them to invade and start replicating.
The Chinese herbal formula, Gan Mao Ling, is frequently used to prevent colds and flu at the first signs of onset. It is most useful when taken right when a person begins to feel chilled and feverish. It has also been shown to reduce the duration of the flu once the person is already sick. Yinchiao San is another formula that can help towards the beginning of a cold or flu, right when a person starts feeling feverish with a sore throat.
Many essential oils used in aromatherapy have antiviral effects. Eucalyptus oil, lemon oil, ravensara oil, geranium oil, and thyme oil all have antiviral properties. These oils can be used in a massage blend diluted in a carrier oil, or they can be diffused in an oil burner, so that we breathe in the oils antiviral properties through our lungs. A few drops can also be added to bath water. Essential oils are some of the most potent infection fighters natural medicine. Do not discount their powers simply because they smell pretty.
Digestive enzymes, when taken in between meals, are absorbed through the intestines into the bloodstream. These enzymes can help to break down the proteins that viruses are composed of, and may help to destroy or inactivate them.
As you can see, there are many natural methods for increasing our resistance and helping to fight off influenza and other viral illnesses every day for common complaints and also in cases of an emergency pandemic.

Some of the best remedies for common ailments seem to have been forgotten in today’s society where a trip to the pharmacy can yield a medicine that will cure anything. The next time you have one of these common ailments, try doing what grandma did and take a trip to your kitchen cabinet instead of to the drug store. It will be kinder on your wallet as well as your health!
While supplements of vitamin C, D and zinc will shorten the lifespan of a common cold, a hot lemon drink is also extremely good. Cool lemon juice and honey are a great soother for a sore throat and gives the body much-needed vitamin C at the same time The juice of one lemon in a glass of water is sufficient.
When you have the cold or flu the constant rubbing of tissue on your nose and lips can cause chaffing and soreness. Try a smear of vaseline or petroleum jelly on those sore lips and nose.
A 'streaming cold' where the nose and eyes water profusely, can be inconvenient and even embarrassing but believe it or not, you can help alleviate these runny symptoms with an onion. Simply dip a slice of onion into a glass of hot water for two seconds, then sip the cooled water throughout the day. In fact, onion is a good thing to have around when you have a cold and putting half an onion on the bedside table at night can get rid of your cold symptoms because its odor is inhaled while you sleep.
For those unpleasant times when you suffer from diarrhea, two tablespoons of brown vinegar will usually fix the problem.
In addition to common kitchen products, many herbs can be used to treat ailments instead of expensive drugs. For example, if you suffer from headaches dizziness or tinnitus, you might try feverfew leaves.
The Tea Tree and Eucalyptus oils are useful for treating a variety of respiratory ailments. These are excellent for the treatment of colds and coughs. They can be massaged into the chest or burned in an oil burner to help clear the airways and prevent congestion. Tea Tree oil is a natural antiseptic and can be dabbed on cuts, bites and stings. It is often used to treat spots and pimples and when diluted with water, acts as a mouth gargle (keep in-mind it should never be swallowed).
The herb black cohosh is a powerful relaxant as well and is extremely effective in easing painful menstrual cramps. Ovarian cramps will be relieved as well as bringing on a delayed menstrual cycle. It is also effective in the treatment of arthritis, osteo-arthritis, rheumatic pain and neurological pan. In small doses, appetite and digestion are greatly improved and is very beneficial for the nervous system in general.

There is no cure for gout, but it can be controlled and treated. Usually, the pain associated with gout will subside within 24 hours after treatment has begun. The main objectives of treatment are pain relieving and prevent future attacks of gout.
Although gout is well known, it is not a typical arthritic condition. Gout is caused by an accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints, causing joint pain and inflammation.
Colchicine is a traditional drug used since the 1800's as a treatment for gout. Although Colhicine produces desirable results, it does have side effects of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are also used to treat gout, which does not have the side effects of colhicine. Indomethacin is a widely used NSAID in the treatment of gout. Patients should avoid Aspirin and aspirin-containing products during the attack of gout.
Those people who have had multiple attacks or developed tophi or kidney stones should stabilize uric acid level in the blood. Probenecid is an important drug, which helps the kidney, eliminate uric acid. Another drug called Alopurinol is used to block the excess production of uric acid by the body. The drug of choice between these types of drugs depends upon the quantity of uric acid excreted through urine.
Zyloprim, is a potent treatment for gout, and is usually prescribe for gout patients with kidney stones or other kidney problems. This drug slows down the rate of production of uric acid by the body. The patients who took this drug showed side effects such as skin rashes and stomach upset. Both of these symptoms usually go away as the body began accustomed to the drug.
As we know, prevention is better than treatment; avoiding the intake of food high in uric acid can readily prevent the occurrence of gout. Reducing alcohol consumption is also often helpful.
Alcoholic beverages should not exceed 3 ounces per day. Reduce or eliminate the purine-containing foods such as organ meats (sweet breads, liver, and kidneys), shrimp, sardines, dried legumes, and anchovies.
There are many natural products available in the market. Incorporate flax seed or omega 3 oil into your diet to help reduce inflammation and tissue damage. Burdock root can help rid the body of acidic waste build up and help supports normal uric acid levels in the body.
If you suffer from gout, see your doctor and discuss a pain relief program and a correct diet to reduce gout occurrences. With correct treatment and diet, gout outbreaks can be well controlled.

Nine out of 10 people have dark circles under eyes, so it is quite common to have them more or less visible.
Unless there are genetically inherited, the factors that can cause dark eye circles are related to stress, fatigue, age, allergies, sun exposure and so on. The good news is there are remedies for each situation. Let's see:
Lack or poor quality of sleep. Sleep means a minimum activity for the body. It is an opportunity for rest and restoration in organs and tissues. Dermatologists recommend 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. If not, blood vessels become more visible resulting in dark eye circles.
Increased fluid retention. This condition may be a consequence of internal disorder due of the blood vessels located under the eye areas can become dilated and engorged. But very often fluid retention is caused by a salt dietary or smoking. In these situations the solution is a normal diet and/or smoking cessation.
Aging. On one hand aging may produce sunken appearance. On the other hand the skin may lose its tension and firmness. You may improve your appearance using cosmetic products with antioxidant ingredients such as Vitamins A and C and green tea. Also nourish and moisturize the under eye areas using an appropriate cream.
Sun exposure. It can contribute to dark eye circles by weakening the skin and creating 'age spots'. You may use the anti aging remedies described above, plus a sunscreen use everyday.
Food allergies. In many cases, dark eye circles are a consequence of an allergic condition caused by a some food your body cannot tolerate well. If you can associate appearance of dark circles with a special food intake, you better avoid it.

Most people have heard of gout, but I suspect many don't know what it really is. Simply put, gout is a disease caused by excessive levels of uric acid in the blood-stream (hyperuricemia). Not everyone who has high levels of this acid their blood develops gout disease, but it does seem most do. Specifically, gout occurs when uric-acid crystals form around body joints like knees, fingers, elbows and especially big toes - in fact, for the vast majority of gout sufferers, the first sign of the disease is big toe pain! After salt-like crystals form, inflammation, tenderness, and even a reddish rash may occur around affected joints.
The disease has been noted and documented since the time of Hippocrates. Traditionally, it's been associated with exuberant living - eating and drinking well. And there is some indirect evidence to support this. For example, a long-term study noted that heavy consumers of meat and sea food were much more likely to develop gout. Additionally, significant alcohol consumption, especially in the form of beer, is also known to increase the risk of gout development.
Below are simple home remedies that may help to relieve pain and other symptoms linked to this sometimes debilitating disease. It's unlikely they will all work for or apply to you, so it may be worth experimenting with different remedies to find the ones that personally help alleviate your symptoms.
* An old study supported by a recent one and significant amount of anecdotal stories suggest drinking cherry juice may help alleviate pain caused by uric-acid crystal formation.
* Soaking the affected joint or joints in warm water, or having a warm bath, may also help.
* Drinking plenty of water may help eliminate uric acid from the body.
* Cutting back on alcohol and meat (especially red) consumption should reduce the level of digestive purines from which uric acid is formed.
* If you're overweight, slowly losing weight may also help.
* A recent study suggested taking vitamin C supplements may reduce the risk of gout attacks, so this is worth considering too.
These are just some simple remedies that may help curb gout attacks. Visit my website: http://www.gout-diet-tips.com/gout_relief/ for many more ideas.

NOTE: Before trying any home remedy or across the counter medicine, everyone should first check with a physician, especially when a baby or young child is concerned.
Most parents pick up ideas to help with common ailments that their infants and toddlers may suffer such as diarrhea, constipation, croup, or colic. A few home remedies can increase the child’s comfort level, and at times even eliminate the problem temporarily.
An old Cherokee treatment for diarrhea uses the juice from blackberries. Children old enough to eat solid foods without any trouble and adults can eat the fruit or drink the juice from fresh, frozen, or canned blackberries . Toddlers can drink the juice from canned berries. For infants, a ounce of juice should be mixed with an ounce of water and given the baby in a bottle. Checking with a doctor is advisable if the child might have allergies.
A home remedy for constipation in babies involved using Karo Dark Syrup in water. A tablespoon full to two tablespoons in four ounces warm water, mixed well in a bottle, and fed to the infant usually helps the situation. Again, if the bowels don’t loosen within two days or if the baby has a condition that syrup shouldn’t be used, a doctor should be contacted
A baby or child with croup has a problem breathing, and who panics more, the one who can’t breathe or the parent, is rather close in degree. Breathing the warm, moist air from a steaming shower or vaporizer worked with my children, grandchildren, and even adults when the coughing and struggle to breathe arrived. We would rub medicated ointment on the chest and neck and under the nose before sitting with the baby or child in the bathroom, the shower spraying only hot water, causing steam to fill the room. The shower mist seemed to work better than the vaporizer.
Most infants have at least one attack of colic, crying for hours from the pain in their tummies. By filling a hot water bottle about one third full of warm water, placing a towel or receiving blanket over the top of the bottle, and then laying the baby, stomach down, across the bottle, the warmth and slight (but giving) pressure will help to ease the infant’s discomfort.
Other home remedies can be found in family history, on the Internet, and/or in books. Only try those which cannot harm the infant, and then if relief isn’t found within hours or at most two days, contact a physician.

Here are some homemade remedies suggested by skin experts.
In order to maintain a healthy and a clear skin tone you need to use suitable medications along with a wholesome diet. In fact, the products that are manufactured are usually made up of harsh chemicals that can easily penetrate into the blood, causing damages to the other organs.
Coconut oil significantly acts as a moistening material when the skin is dry and rough. Therefore it is can be appropriately used to treat various aliments such as roughened lips, eyes, broken capillaries, cellulite or burns etc. Coconut butter can be mixed with lip balm gel, eye cream or may be preserved in sterilized jars. Besides, there are many alternative medications advised such as peppermint for lips, patchouli oil or lavender for acne, chamomile for eczema and grapefruit for cellulite.
The most commonly used ointments for sunburns are strawberries, cucumber slices, gels or the leaf of the aloe vera plant. They are often easily cured as they exhibit soothing, cooling and antifungal properties. If you keep cool tea bags or cucumber slices over the dark circles of your eyes, they will reduce the dark colors formed around the eyelids.
You can also prepare a mixture of cornstarch, baking soda or essential oil to smoothen the texture of your skin. If you are applying it to your feet add tea tree oil to the toner because it kills all the tiny microorganisms that are present.
The most important tip is to consume a healthy diet such as vegetables, fruits and plenty of water. Sleeping soundly is one of the most vital activities, as it nourishes the skin.
If you follow the above-mentioned tips you will surely develop a radiant skin texture.

Years of walking and running can wear down our feet, and can be hard on our heels. Likewise, poor circulation, improperly trimmed toenails, disease and tight fitting shoes all contribute to pain in the heel.
1. Massage with waterThis treatment is ideal for any type of foot or heel pain and only needs a container of hot and cold water. Here’s what you do:
1. Soak your foot for 5 minutes in cold water
2. Move the foot to a container of hot water of a tolerable temperature. The temperature of the water should not be cool or even lukewarm
3. Soak the foot in the hot water for 5 minutes
4. Return to the cold water
Repeat the procedure until the pain is gone. This process has a massaging effect that revitalizes feet by opening and closing blood vessels.
It is also a great idea to rub moisturizing lotion into your feet before getting into bed. The lotion makes feet easier to massage and therefore bring relief faster.
2. Put some heat on your feetUsing ointments enriched with capsaicin, an active natural ingredient in hot peppers also helps in relieving foot pain.
These products are excellent in cooling the pain caused by burning feet particularly for diabetes patients. Initial application of the ointment may cause some burning sensation for many people, but when used regularly, the burning effect is likely to lessen.
Moreover, people who been using the capsaicin in treating their burning feet have experienced great improvement and were able to walk more easily compared to those using other types of creams. Best of all, since these are topical medicine, patients tend to avoid a lot of side effects that usually happen when taking pills.
Most ointments are available over the counter, however it is important to talk with your doctor before you begin, as this type of therapy is not right for everyone.
3. Avoid high-heeled shoesFor recreational walkers and runners it is important to temporarily lower how much you’re walking or running when you’re about to use brand new shoes. This will help you to eliminate many of the break-in pains. Advances in shoe development have made modern athletic footwear much less likely to cause a problem than ever before.
4. Stretch out your calfStretching the heel cord at the back of the foot can relieve heel pain.
Start by:
1. Standing three feet away from a wall, place your hand on the wall.
2. Lean in to the wall, bringing one leg forward and bending at the elbows.
3. Keep your back leg straight with the heel on the floor and then gently stretch the calf muscle.
4. Repeat for the other foot.
5. Buy shoes that fit the shape of your feet.
Shoe size is considered to be the most important aspect in buying shoes — but the shoe shape is equally important. You read it right; the shape of the shoe is also an important factor to consider.
There three basic foot shapes — curved, slightly curved and straight. Although, there may be some variations, generally those individuals with high arches need a curved shoe; those with flat feet need a straight shoe and those who have neither flat or high arches need a slight curve.
When buying running or walking shoes it is best to select shapes that fit the curve of the arch on the inner side of the foot. Before you try any of the remedies discussed here, consult your own doctor for the treatments that will be best for your unique situation.

In our go-get-it-now society today, whenever we feel that there is something 'a little off' with us, we go over to the local pharmacy and purchase a whole range of patent medicines and take them. Sometimes we go to our family physician and get a drug prescription. This has become part of our everyday routine, almost automatic. However, this has not always been the case. This so-called Drug Revolution only kicked off after World War II, although doctors already had access to a multitude of remedies before that.
In contrast with modern medicine, folk medicine dates back to ancient times. This is why many of us feel that herbal medicine is outdated and old. Herbal remedies are very old but apparently not outdated. Archaeological evidence proves that primitive human beings made use of healing plants. Back then, it was only natural for humans to use whatever was available to them, whether it was to keep them warm, to feed them or to make them well. The quest for finding cures for certain ailments was obviously carried out on a trial and error basis over the centuries. These cures and techniques were originally handed down from generation to generation by word of mouth since back then this was the only way possible.
In the later years, with the introduction of the National Health Service and other government health agencies, people could consult physicians free of charge and these doctors are more inclined to prescribe modern synthetic drugs. This and the fact that people started to move into more urban areas where medical treatment was made more readily available and the fact that transportation and communication had generally increased, marked the decrease in the population's reliance on the cures that were based at home, in the kitchen and in the fields.
Recently, there has been a new reaction bubbling in our society against our modern, technological age. Now, people are once again turning to simple, natural things and rejecting the sophisticated, complex and synthetic. People are again relying on herbal remedies for illnesses and herbal medicine has become a popular branch of alternative medicine. To some extent, the wheel has turned a full circle.
The use of these simple remedies can help relieve some of the annoyances that plague us everyday and can relieve you of some of the discomfort as these can be simple holistic alternative.
The entire field of folk and herbal medicine in one that is full of potential risk because some herbs can be toxic and can be inappropriate or even dangerous in some situations. Anyone who is thinking of using herbal cures should first consult an herbal specialist who is trained in the science of modern herbal medicine techniques.
Remember that before applying any of these remedies to yourself; please be aware that sometimes small aches and pains could be symptoms of something more serious. This may or may not be true but please use your judgment and consult with your doctor. Regular physical examinations and check-ups should be part of everybody's health regimen. One should also always strive to have a healthy lifestyle with proper diet and exercise.

Over the years we as a society have gotten away from tried and true herbal cures and other traditional remedies and dismissed them as being "too folksy".
Once upon a time, we would turn to our parents or grandparents when something was different with our little ones. More often than not, now we turn to family clinician. But they were never taught what our grandmothers learned from their own mothers, techniques that have been tried and true for a very long time.
Sometimes we tend to rely too much and modern technology, there are times when we need to get back to basics.
In this regard we would certainly be well advised to take a cue from the Far East where such inexpensive herbal cures are the norm-and often more effective than the costly high-tech approach that we in the West rely so heavily upon.
Take Asthma, for instance. One largely lost remedy is a very simple one: Just apply lobelia (either in liquid form or else mixed with a carrier such as aloe vera or massage oil) to the chest and simply rub in.
Why is the Aloe Vera so helpful and important?
Well first off, it should be noted that Aloe Vera has been noted for quite some time for it's medical and wellness properties. It is a true health plant to be certain.
It can also be found in various supplements, liquids, drinks and so on. Ancient healers recorded the wonders of Aloe Vera in their written records. One such recorded benefit is it's great ability to promote a healthier skin.
Despite the fact that the majority of individuals know aloe vera mainly for its topical use, it has quite a few additional benefits as well. Manufacturers utilize the plant in a variety of different ways. Broadly speaking, individuals who injest aloe internally on a routine schedule often report a heightened feeling of euphoria and calmness of being.
Perhaps one of the best features of aloe vera is the strong support it gives for the absorption of certain crucial minerals and gives of itself to maximize whatever vitamins, minerals, antioxidants or nutritional supplements the body is trying to process.
Aloe Vera is also a superb anti-inflammatory substance, which is why it is used on cuts and burns as well as in various nutritional supplements. In addition to it's noted wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties Aloe is also known for it's important immune-stimulatory activities. Surprisingly, only a few aloe species out of more than three hundred total breeds are currently used in a commercial fashion.
One of the reasons that Aloe is so effective are due to important bioactive components called chromones.
The more you study it, the more you appreciate the natural wonder that is Aloe Vera.

Citrus juices are a constipation remedy that is an excellent way to stimulate your colon and other parts of the body. Since your colon is less active at night, drinking juices as soon as you awaken and get up can stimulate strong peristaltic action and promote a bowel movement.
Lemons:Lemons are filled with minerals, especially potassium, Vitamin C, and bioflavonoids. They have a cleansing action for the entire body.
Fresh lemon juice is the king of fruit juices. It contains citric acid, which acts in the body in a way no other juice does. First it acts on the liver to build up its enzymes so it can detoxify toxins in the blood. Then it combines with calcium to form soluble chemical substances. This makes it effective in removing kidney and pancreatic stones, plack build up along artery walls, and other calcium deposits that occur in the body.
When the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas are not working right, food digestion is affected. This in turn will create constipation.
Use lemons moderately since they break up oils during digestion and in our body they make oils less available to our cells and joints.
If you have lemon allergies or ulcers then you should avoid lemon juice. If you have arthritis lemons are not a good choice.
Here’s what to do:Squeeze one lemon into a glass of warm distilled water. Drink it first thing when you wake up. Don’t drink anything else for at least 1/2 hour
You can use a citrus press to juice the lemon or just squeeze it to get the juice out.
Grapefruit Juice:Another constipation remedy you can use is drinking a glass of fresh squeezed grapefruit first thing in the morning. Again wait at least 1/2 hour before you eat anything.
If you are taking any anticonvulsant drugs, birth control pills, estrogen, protease inhibitors and even other types of drugs avoid drinking grapefruit juice. It slows the breakdown of certain drugs allowing them to increase in the blood to dangerous levels.
Grapefruit and Orange Juice:One drink I like in the morning is a combination of grapefruit and orange juice. Just prepare a half and half drink of these citrus fruits and drink it first thing in the morning.

Natural Remedy for Motion Sickness

Motion sickness is a normal response to real, perceived, or anticipated movement. People tend to experience motion sickness on a moving boat, train, airplane, automobile, or amusement park rides. Head movement can increase motion sickness. Avoid drinking alcohol or eating a heavy meal before travel. During an extended flight, eat small meals and drink small amounts of fluids either before or during a flight to help reduce nausea and vomiting. As we know very well, prevention is better than cure; the following natural remedy measures may be adopted for curing motion sickness.
Folk remedies for motion sickness have probably been around since man first decided to seriously check out the scenery beyond his own backyard. Some of the home remedies are still popular and followed now days. They may not work for all and may not work every time, still it is more populous among the human population. The common natural remedy followed all over the world is Olives and lemons. Some doctors noted that early stages of motion sickness cause you to produce excess saliva and nausea.
Olives produce chemicals called tannins, which make your mouth dry. Hence, the theory goes, eating a couple of olives at the first hint of nausea can help diminish it, as may sucking on a mouth-puckering lemon. Though this remedy is so old but still it is popular today and is certainly worth a try. The other natural remedy available through out the entire continent is Ginger root. Ginger works by the way it absorbs the acids and blocking nausea in the gastro-intestinal tract.
A scientific study conducted gives the result that two powdered gingerroot capsules were more effective than Dramamine in preventing motion sickness. For example, in one clinical trial of 80 novice sailors (prone to motion sickness), those who took ginger (in powder form) experienced a significant reduction in vomiting and cold sweating compared to those who took placebo.
Although black horehound (ballota nigra) and peppermint (mentha piperita) have not been scientifically studied for their use in treating motion sickness, some professional herbalists may recommend these herbs in combination to alleviate nausea associated with the condition. Soda crackers also being used as home remedies. Soda crackers won’t stop salivation, but dry soda crackers might help absorb the excess fluid when it reaches your stomach.
Ginger in any form, fresh, ginger pills that you get from a health food store, powdered in tea proves to be good natural remedy. Even ginger ale, although it is far less effective can also be used as a natural remedy. When ever you get sick going up to the mountains you should suck on a wintergreen lifesaver or any other wintergreen mint it makes it go away really quick and leaves your mouth feeling fresh.
Although the tradition dates back hundreds of years, eating a bit of ginger recently passed scientific scrutiny when an experiment showed that two powdered gingerroot capsules were more effective than a dose of Dramamine in preventing motion sickness. Researchers theorize that ginger works, by absorbing acids and blocking nausea in your gastrointestinal tract.

Pain is a condition that drastically inhibits the ability to live a normal, happy life, and people will pay dearly to make the pain go away. And medical science has responded swiftly and with much promotion to that call. It seems every year we are introduced to a newer, better pain relief medication that is purported to be better, faster and more effective than its predecessors.
And while this may be true, it seems that more and more of these newer, better and more effective pain medications are being pulled off the shelves as fast as they were put on them due to serious health concerns coming to light after real "civilians" have taken the drug and experienced health complications.
It begs the question, can't we conquer pain without compromising our other bodily functions and maintain our health in other areas, or must we always sacrifice one component of our health to reduce the greater of the two evils (always pain)?
This is not true any more for people living with chronic pain, or even the type of pain that comes just often enough to be burdensome and make you a less effective, less joyful person.
There have been great strides in natural medicines, and pain relief is just another example of how herbal medcine has come so far. Herbal pain remedies are creating quite a little buzz right now due to their superior pain-reducing qualities, and absence of side effects.
Herbal pain remedies utilize powerful anti inflammatory agents found in nature, as well as pain receptor inhibitors that are found in various parts of herbs and botanicals in the wild. It is a precise blend of these anti inflammatory herbs and naturally pain inhibiting botanics that creates a very effective overall approach to fighting pain without side effects, and with all natural ingredients.

Natural remedies for asthma may bring about longer term relief from the disease which is likely to be associated with a deficiency of omega 3 essential fatty acids
Asthma is a respiratory disease that is characterised by sudden onset with closure of bronchial tubes by spasmodic muscles. Atopic asthma has eczema as a feature along with the respiratory disease.
This is a disease involving poor absorption of omega three essential fatty acids and deficiencies of manganese and magnesium.
A number of studies have confirmed the increased likelihood of children developing asthma if the maternal diet is low in omega three oils and also the requirement of minerals such as manganese and magnesium for healthy lung function.
Natural remedies for asthma should include:

Pancreatic enzymes and ox bile at 75-200m each three times per day before meals. These will assist with digestion and absorption of important nutrients
Essential fatty acids at 5g three times per day.
Colloidal minerals - which contain magnesium and manganese.

Herbs are very useful for treating asthma - use caution if you have plant allergies. Useful plant herbs include: honeysuckle, jaborandi, leaks, garlic, evening primrose oil.
Essential oils may be of significant benefit as natural remedies for asthma and may be inhaled or massaged into the upper body. Oils include eucalyptus globulus and eucalyptus radiata, peppermint, Ravensara and Naiouli.
Along with these natural remedies for asthma have an inhaler ready to cope with any sudden attacks.
Preventing an attack. Here's some factors that may trigger an attack: cold air, salt and sudden over-exertion.
Healthy Diet & Lifestyle.A healthy diet should be part of your natural remedies for asthma treatment plan. An over-consumption of omega 6 (found mainly in vegetable oils) and low consumption of omega 3 oils found in deep sea, cold water fish (such as salmon, tuna, mackerel) and flax seed can increase the childhood risk of asthma.
Best advice is to maximize the intake of omega three oils from fish and EFA supplements and avoid fried food and vegetable oils. Consume plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables including green leafy vegetables which will contain dietary sources of manganese and magnesium. Also plenty of water.

Dry hair tends to be thin and rough. It is susceptible to tangles, damage, breakage and split ends. We suggest a few remedies you can try at home for managing dry hair.
The primary aim is to replenish the oil and the moisture in the hair. That is why the emphasis is on the conditioning aspect of hair care. Strong cleansing routines and dry toning exercises and massaging of the scalp promote dryness and flakiness of the scalp.
The use of strong-action shampoo is prohibited for dry hair. Often a generous oil application and massage is recommended before washing the hair. Frequent shampooing is harmful for dry hair.
For the moisture-dry hair, a moisturizer application is required.
Home remedy for dry hair: The Gentle Cleanser
1. Beat an egg in a cup of skimmed milk. When the foam becomes consistent, rub it into the scalp. Leave it on for 5 minutes. Rinse the hair thoroughly with water. Carry out this routine twice a week.
2. Take a cup of coconut milk and add two tablespoons of gram flour or one teaspoon of shikakai. Apply on your scalp and hair and massage gently. Rinse it out after five minutes. Follow this recipe at least once a week.
Another dry hair home remedy: The Protein Conditioner Beat one tablespoon of castor oil, one tablespoon of glycerin, a teaspoon of cider vinegar and a teaspoon of protein, plus a tablespoon of mild herbal shampoo. Apply it on scalp and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse with clear water.
A Special Massage Oil/Toner:
Get a bottle of castor oil or coconut oil. Add a teaspoon of lavender essential oil in it. Heat a little and massage it gently in your scalp at night. Rinse or shampoo it out in the morning. Follow this routine at least twice a week.
Other tips on home based treatment of dry hair:
1. First assess whether your scalp and hair are moisture dry or oil-dry. 2. Condition your hair as often as you wash it. 3. Never comb, brush or massage vigorously if the hair is extremely dry.
Before any kind of routine care is followed, be familiar with the needs of your scalp and hair.

Losing your hair is frustrating. Millions of people, men and women, experience it every year. There are about as many treatments on the market as there are sufferers. There are three main categories of hair loss remedies. Natural approaches use herbs and other non-evasive forms of treatments. Medications involve oral and topical medicines. Surgery involves different methods of replacing lost hair.
The basic premise of a natural hair loss remedy is not to introduce anything unnatural to your body. Through the use of herb supplements or other natural remedies, these treatments are focused on preventing further hair loss rather than replacing lost hair. Saw Palmetto extract is one of the main herbal methods used. Also, practice good lifestyle habits regarding your hair, such as gentle washing, scalp massages and eating healthily. Certain vitamins are shown to really promote hair growth and retention.
Medications are available through prescription or over the counter. The most popular medications are those used in the form of shampoo and hair tonic. Again, these methods focus more on hair loss prevention rather than hair regrowth. Medications also only work for specific types of hair loss, so be sure to discuss the use with your doctor and read all labels thoroughly.
Surgery is the only remedy that actually focuses on getting lost hair back. Early attempts were unsuccessful and left the patient with obviously unnatural looking hair. Technology and recent breakthroughs have provided a better, more natural look after surgery. Most often the method used is transplanting hair from one portion of the head to the balding area. It depends on how the hair is lost as to what approach the doctor will take.
The choice of which hair loss remedy is best is highly dependent on the person seeking help and the cause of the hair loss. Each hair loss remedy is to be applied under different circumstances. If you are looking for a hair loss remedy, then you should look closely at all your options and weigh them against what would best solve your problems.

PMS Remedy

The first step in dealing with PMS is to understand one’s monthly cycle better and to know when to expect ovulation and premenstrual changes to take place. Women with regular menstrual cycles can note symptoms that occur in the days leading up to their periods and also note the days on which their periods begin. This information is used to calculate the approximate ovulation date and to help prepare mentally and emotionally for the onset of PMS.
There are some lifestyle changes that help reduce PMS symptoms and reduce the risk for these symptoms in women who aren’t currently suffering from PMS. Regular exercise helps fight PMS symptoms in several ways. Exercise releases endorphins, which help elevate the mood and reduce pain sensitivity. Exercise also has many other beneficial health effects on the body. Daily calcium supplements, alone or combined with vitamin B6 supplements, can also help reduce PMS symptoms. Cutting down on caffeine, chocolate, salty foods, alcohol and smoking also brings relief to many women.
Knowing what to expect and being prepared can go a long way in reducing the discomfort of PMS. If bloating or breast tenderness is a problem, wearing loose-fitting clothes or a more supportive bra can help. Relaxation techniques, such as yoga and massages, can help reduce stress and create a sense of well-being. Recent research suggests that sleep deprivation for one night in the premenstrual phase and exposure to fluorescent light in the mornings and evenings may improve PMS symptoms in some women.
While simple lifestyle changes and home remedies can help alleviate many of the symptoms of PMS, medication may be necessary to deal with more severe symptoms. A physician should be consulted if severe pain is experienced, if symptoms are severe enough to interfere with daily activities, or if psychological symptoms such as depression and anxiety are pronounced.

While colic seems like an incurable situation there are some options that will offer comfort and soothe your baby. Many of these remedies happen to be natural, yet many parents don't turn to these first even though they might work better. Regardless, many parents turn to natural colic remedies when they can find nothing else to soothe their baby. Most doctors don't have any suggestions that will help you soothe your baby's colic, so natural remedies might be your best option. When you can no longer stand sleepless nights and a crying baby you might want to try some of the following natural remedies for colic.
One natural remedy that has amazing results with many babies suffering from colic is herbal tea. This might sound strange to you, but herbal tea helps adults feel better and babies as well. Doctors will even approve four ounces or more of herbal tea daily for babies suffering from colic. The different elements in herbal tea helps baby feel better and soothes the symptoms of colic. However, don't feed your baby too much herbal tea because you want him to still have an appetite for breast milk or formula that has all of those important nutrients. Don't make the tea too strong either. Remember, you are making the tea for a baby so weak is fine. Teas like chamomile, catnip, ginger, and even peppermint seem to work the best.
Other remedies for colic include herbal remedies you can find at your local drugstore. Humphries and iBaba are both herbal remedies that are natural and have a calming affect on your baby. Most of the time when you give your baby one of these herbal remedies you will notice a calming effect quickly as the medicine works to calm the intestines, relieve gas, and simply make the baby feel better. These remedies are generally small dissolvable pills that can be placed in the baby's cheek or else dissolved in water and given to baby.
Yet another natural remedy includes massage and chiropractic adjustment. Both of these natural remedies work to relieve colic and help your baby feel better. You can learn some basis massage techniques from baby massage books and on the Internet as well as visit a baby massage therapist. If you believe your baby's colic is from misalignment you might want to visit the chiropractor.
There are many natural remedies for colic as you can see and you may be surprised at some of them. However, all of these natural remedies work for different babies so if you try one and it doesn't work you just might need to try another and another until you find the best natural remedy for your baby.

Constipation describes situations wherein patients have difficulty moving their bowels. From most of the persons complaining of Constipation, only a very few have any serious underlying disease that needs specialized tests and treatment by a gastroenterologist.
Educating the patient about worrying too much about bowel patterns can treat most of the cases. Bowel training – attempting a bowel movement everyday at the same time, preferably early mornings when colon activity is high - can be practiced. The food habits form the important part of the remedy. Eating high-fiber foods like cereals, vegetables and fruits helps a great deal. Limiting foods like ice cream, cheese, meat and processed foods is also preferable. Drinking 1.5 – 2 liters of water per day is essential, as is avoiding dehydrating drinks containing caffeine and alcohol. Regular exercise, besides having other health benefits, is a must for avoiding Constipation.
The diagnosis of Constipation is done using methods like physical examination, colorectal transit study, anorectal function tests, barium enema x ray and sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy.
If no appreciable improvement takes place with the lifestyle changes, then a bulk-forming laxative is indicated. Psyllium and methylcellulose are bulk-forming laxatives which can be used for a long time without side effects. Next in line are medications like hyprosmotics, lactulose, Polyethylene glycol, Glycerin and Sorbitol, and Salines like magnesium hydroxide, magnesium citrate and sodium phosphate. The third-line medications are Anthraquinones like Cascara sagrada, Emollients such as Docusates, Senna and mineral oil, and stimulants such as Phenolpthalein, castor oil or Bisacodyl.
The use of the above medicines must be under strict supervision by healthcare professionals, and only done as a short-term measure, since most of them have side effects. Patients under the administration of laxatives should aim at stopping them slowly. In most cases, the ability of the colon to contract will be restored after some time. Enemas and suppositories are used as an emergency treatment. Surgery should be considered as a last resort when all other measures fail.

Back pain exercises are much sought after these days because back pain is a common phenomenon amongst people under the age of 45 and can be rectified effectively only if the true cause behind the pain is identified. Barring a few exceptions, exercises for back pain are effective for all types of back pain, be it the pain in the lower back ore pain in the upper back. Exercises also provide a solution for back pain related to genetically or trauma related deformities and subsequent pain.
Causes of Back Pain:Before we understand about the exercises to relieve back pain, we should have an understanding of human spine and possible causes of back pain. Human body depends on the spinal column for structural stability and mobility. It is the spine which provides us the necessary support to bend, twist or move around. The spinal column is made up of 24 vertebrae which are placed one on another from the skull to the pelvis. The spinal column is tightly wrapped by muscles and ligaments. Now any type of injury in these muscles or ligaments can result in pain. You can rectify or reduce such back pains by carrying out proper back pain exercises.
Exercises- The Safest Cure For Back Pain:Backache usually is a result of the spasm of muscles supporting our spine. This occurs due to improper posture, or sudden movements or jerks or repetitive actions. Diseases such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, viral infection, and bladder or kidney infection, gynecological problems in women, tumors and trauma can also cause back pain. Excess body weight, wearing of improper shoes and carrying heavy weights can also result in back pain. The best remedy for backache occurring from these reasons is back pain exercises. This is mainly because exercises to relieve back pain are safe and free from any possible side effects that is a possibility with other treatments for back pain.
However, back pain exercises may not prove to be effective in cases where the pain is not caused by an improper posture or sudden movements, jerks or is accompanied by bowel or bladder control problems. In such cases, it is advisable that the person suffering from backache consults a physician and gets a proper treatment.
The best way to avoid back ache is to maintain a proper posture and keep your muscles well conditioned by undertaking proper back pain exercises. One should never bend at the waist or stoop to pick up an object. Instead, we should lower our body to the level of the object by bending our knees.
The most common back pain exercise is to stand straight or sit on a comfortable chair that provides adequate support to your back. You should avoid sitting or standing in a single posture for a long time. Even while sleeping, you should be careful as to the type of mattress being used. Slouching or leaning forward should be avoided at all times. Yoga and mediation go a long way in relieving back pain and are very good exercises.
Prevention, it is said is the best cure for back pain. You can avoid backache by undertaking back pain exercises on a regular basis. These exercises strengthen the muscles in the abdomen and the spinal area and ensure that there is adequate support to the spine. Wall slides, leg raises and leg swings are the best exercises and abdominal strengthening exercises prove to be effective in toning up our back muscles.

Stiff Neck Remedy - Chinese Style

These easy-to-do traditional Chinese techniques form a highly effective stiff neck remedy. The first is a simple massage technique that warms and loosens your neck muscles to relieve stiffness and pain. The second technique provides stiff neck relief by stimulating blood flow in your neck, shoulders and upper back - all you need is a spoon and a few drops of oil.
Stiff Neck Remedy - Neck Massage
Rub your hands together briskly to warm them up and charge them with energy. Place your palms on the back of your neck with your fingers interlocked. Rub your neck from side to side for several minutes. Feel the heat penetrating your neck muscles. Repeat several times a day.
Or, as above but just use the fingers of one hand to rub your neck with firm, even strokes from the base of your skull to the base of your neck. Make sure you rub both sides of the back of your neck and any painful or tender spots. This technique works well as a preventative stiff neck remedy too - as soon as you begin feeling stiffness or pain, use it to relax and loosen your neck muscles.
Stiff Neck Remedy - Skin Scraping
This is a traditional Chinese home remedy for stiff neck that anyone can quickly learn. As it's not easy to do on your own neck you'll need someone else to do it for you. All you need is a spoon and a few drops of oil - massage oil, sesame oil or even vicks vaporub will do. A Chinese soup spoon works well as does the edge of a metal vicks vaporub lid. Basically, you use the edge of the spoon or lid to rub (scrape) the neck for a few minutes until it turns red (or in some cases purple!) The scraping action moves the blood in the underlying muscles and soft tissues of the neck, relieving stiffness and pain almost immediately. It works equally well for acute and chronic stiff neck. Here're the steps to follow:
1. The person with the stiff neck should sit down and remove any clothing or jewelry covering the neck, and also tie up long hair.
2. Apply a few drops of oil to ONE side of the back of the neck - just enough to lightly lubricate the skin. Too much and the spoon will slip and slide uncontrollably.
3. Stand behind the person and start scraping his/her neck in long, even strokes with the edge of the spoon, from the base of the skull, down the neck and across the top of the shoulder. Press as hard as you can without causing excess pain - it's the muscles you're working with more than the skin so you need to apply a little pressure. Apply 30-50 strokes. Notice the skin turning red. There may be lots of tiny red spots which may actually be dark red, purple or even black. This is simply stagnant blood in the muscles - it's nothing to be concerned about. The darker the spots, the more stiffness, pain and stagnation the person usually has in their neck. All you're doing is releasing the stagnant blood and improving circulation in the neck muscles. This very often gives immediate relief.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the other side of the neck. People with neck problems often have pain and tension in their upper back too, so you may also have to scrape down either side of their spine between their shoulder blades.
5. If the person feels dizzy at any stage, stop, and have them lie down and take some slow deep breaths.
6. Depending on the color of the spots, they make take several days to a week or more to fade. Once faded completely, you may reapply the treatment if the person still has pain. One to three scraping treatments over several weeks is usually enough to alleviate most neck problems involving muscular tension, stiffness and pain.
A final note - don't be fooled by the apparent simplicity of this technique. As mentioned, it very often provides instant stiff neck relief and may be the only stiff neck remedy you ever need. In fact the author has found skin scraping to be a more effective stiff neck remedy than acupuncture.

Looking at the various reasons, there are different types of hair loss remedies to choose. A brief list of causes are heredity, aging, high stress, poor nutrition, hormonal changes, and so on. All of these causes create the same effect - hair loss - however, they may need to be treated in different ways.
After assessing the cause of hair loss, individuals need to research the possible treatments to discern the best hair loss remedy.

Coughing, sneezing, runny nose, sore throats, aches and pains? Got a cold? Feeling miserable? What's in the cupboard that can make you feel better? What will help you get over your cold quickly? There are many natural remedies that can help, some you already have at home. Try some of the following.
Ginger is a great warming herb to enjoy during winter. It warms you up by getting your circulation moving. Ginger tea can help to break fevers and remove mucus build up in sinuses, throat and lungs. Grate about 2 tablespoons of fresh ginger root, pour 2 cups of boiling water over, cover and allow to sit for 30 minutes. Drink a cup of this warm delicious tea every 2 hours.
A good old fashioned home made chicken and vegetable soup can be a great comfort when suffering from a cold or flu. It is warming and full of vital nutrients to help get over sickness. Include in your soup plenty of vegetables that are high in Beta-carotene such as carrots, sweet potatoes, turnip greens and spinach. Adding herbs and spices can help bring relief and loosen up mucus. A pinch of Cayenne pepper in your soup can help to fight off some of the aches and pains as well as helping to reduce the fever. Maintain a healthy diet, especially at this time. Avoid sugary and fatty foods; concentrate on nutritious fruit and vegetables, soups, and oats.
Lemons are well known for their healing properties, especially when it comes to colds and flus. Hot honey and lemon drinks are popular. This delicious drink can be made with hot water, adding honey and lemon to taste. However, for more effect try straight lemon juice, warmed with honey. Don't drink it straight down; swish it around in your mouth first. Other common additions to this lemon drink are garlic, ginger and or brandy.
Honey is an age-old remedy for so many different things. When it comes to colds, it can be used as a cough reliever and it has some anti-biotic properties. A teaspoon of honey on its own can be beneficial, or a cough mixture can be made up. Chop up 4-6 cloves of garlic and place them in a jar of honey. After a few weeks the garlic can be removed, leaving a great mix for coughs and sore throats. Garlic is a very effective tool against colds. It is a strong antimicrobial and antiviral agent. Include garlic in your soups and cooking when ever possible.
Soothing teas for coughs and sore throats can be made out of herbs found commonly in your herb garden or spice rack. Sage and Marjoram have antiseptic qualities, while Thyme is antimicrobial. These herbs could be mixed together or taken separately. Take 1-2 teaspoons of the herbs in a cup of boiling water; allow steeping for 30 minutes. Drink warm. This tea is good for soothing coughs, sore throats and tonsils, while also killing germs. (Add these herbs to your soup.)
There are many products available in health food stores that can assist your recovery. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C and A, along with Zinc, can help reduce the duration and severity of symptoms. These are also very useful as a preventive. Herbs such as Echnicaea, Cat's claw, and Astralgulis can fight against colds and flu's and strengthen the immune system.
When cold or flu hits, the most important advice that anyone can follow is to rest. At this time you need to get extra sleep. The immune system functions at its best while we are sleeping. Allow your body the time and opportunity to fight back. Don't rush back into a full schedule as soon as you start to feel better. Take it slowly for a few days, get some early nights, to really allow your body to recuperate. Giving yourself the time to fully recover will help prevent a recurrence.
Drink plenty of liquid, water and herbal teas. When the mucous membranes become dehydrated, they are more hospitable to viruses. A high liquid intake will help repel the virus and also help to flush out the system. Juices and sugary drinks should be avoided. A high sugar intake decreases the ability of the white blood cells to kill bacteria.
At the first sign of a cold, start treating it at once. Increase your vitamin and mineral intake, especially the antioxidants. Start using any of the above treatments or get onto some herbs or tissue salts. The sooner you start to treat a cold, the less severe it is likely to become. A cold should only last a couple of days, if you are no better after a week, seek advice from your health practitioner.
When you are recovering from illness, it is a good time to change your toothbrush. Your toothbrush can harbour the germs you have just been fighting off; changing it now can prevent reinfection.
Without taking care, your illness can change from being a mild cold to something more serious. Remember to take care of yourself.

Garlic is a wonderful healing herb and, unlike many of the other herbs, it tastes great and can be incorporated into a variety of meals. Garlic has been used for over 5000 years as a healing herb and has strong antibacterial, and antiviral properties. But it's health benefits extend well beyond it's infection fighting properties. It is also reputed to help lower cholesterol and blood pressure as well as help protect against heart disease and stroke.
And the benefits of garlic don't stop there. A recent study has shown that taking a garlic supplement once a day can reduce the risk of getting a cold by 50% and help you gain a speedy recovery if you do happen to catch one. In fact, I tried this out recently when I felt a sore throat coming on - I toasted a piece of bread and added some raw crushed garlic to it. It was a bit pungent but I woke up the next day good as new! Aside from colds, garlic has historically been used as a remedy for infections, athletes foot, worms, respiratory ailments, some cancers of the stomach, colic, ear aches, bladder problems and high blood pressure.
Garlic is jut plain good for you too! it is loaded with vitamins and minerals including Vitamin A, B and C, selenium, potassium, calcium, zinc and magnesium. But in order to reap the benefits, you must prepare it in a certain way. Researcher say it is the allicin that is released when garlic is crushed. If you are trying to serve yourself a garlic herbal remedy by adding garlic to your foods then make sure you crush it a bit ahead of time and don't add until the final 5 minutes of cooking. This will give the allicin enough time to develop and will insure you don't cook all the garlic health out of it.
Cooked garlic will not have as much benefit as raw and whole garlic cloves have little benefit at all. Another way to incorporate garlic into your meals without cooking is to make a garlic bread where you crush the gloves into a paste and toast bread - butter the toasted bread and spread the garlic on it - Yum!
Garlic can have an affect on blood clotting, so don't start taking supplements unless you discuss it with your physician first especially if you are on blood thinning medication or due to have surgery in the near future.

What Is A Home Remedy?

Home Remedies - Facts or Quacks?
Myths and legends often have their basis in a grain of truth. So I wondered if home remedies, alternative treatments, and folklore cures might also be based on truth. First, let's try to define the phrase home remedy.
There's No Place Like Home. The name itself proclaims that a home remedy is, well, a remedy that's administered at home! Prescription drugs are often given at home as remedies, so we need to dig a little deeper. When you think of home remedy, don't you think of some sort of cure or treatment that's outside mainstream modern medicine? Me too. Let's take a look at some choices.
The Holistic View. The dictionary defined holistic medicine as an approach to medical care that emphasizes the study of all aspects of a person's health, including physical, psychological, social, economic, and cultural factors. The holistic definition is very broad and could apply to many medical approaches.
Peaches & Herbs? Many people associate herbs with home remedies. The definition for herbal remedy is a plant, or plant part, or an extract or mixture of these used to prevent, alleviate, or cure disease called also herbal medicine. That sounds like a good definition, although home remedies tend to encompass more than herbal remedies. What's next?
Folk Medicine.Folk medicine is defined as traditional medicine especially as practiced by people isolated from modern medical services, and usually involving the use of plant-derived remedies on an empirical basis. Now we're getting somewhere! The old-timers practiced medicine not based entirely on plants when modern medicine wasn't available. Let's dig a little deeper into the dictionary.
Home At Last. Finally we find the dictionary's definition of home remedy: a simply prepared medication or tonic often of unproven effectiveness administered without prescription or pro- fessional supervision. So - it is a remedy prepared outside the realm of modern medicine, it's not limited to herbs, but unproven effectiveness? I disagree. I can prove that some of the simplest home remedies have led to some of our greatest medical breakthroughs (but that's another article).
Is That Your Final Answer?Based on the research above, let's agree to define a home remedy as follows:
An experienced-based or even accidental remedy or cure prepared by common folk from herbs, plants, or other available ingredients when modern medical help was unavailable (or hadn't been devised yet).
That's my answer, and I'm sticking to it!

Is nail fungus hurting your social life?
Nail fungus is an ugly problem. You can't hardly hide it unless you keep your gloves or shoes on.
Do you have nail fungus? How do you know? Nail fungus makes your finger or toe nails yellow and thick. They become very brittle and break easily. They will crack and become ragged looking. If you are in the early stages of nail fungus, your nails might not be this bad but they will only get worse.
As your fungus worsens, your nails will start to crack and break. They don't break like normal, healthy nails, large chunks of nail will break off, leaving raw, exposed skin underneath. Not only is this painful but it is also very embarrassing.
This exposed skin is already weak from the fungus. Now you run the risk of getting an infection in this area. As if the fungus was not bad enough. This new infection is very difficult to treat considering the fungus will keep re-infecting the area.
It is best to eliminate the fungus now before you get to that point.Special Offer on Leucatin at http://www.allnaturalcures.net/leucatin.htm
Nail fungus is so embarrassing. You don't want anyone to know you have it. If you are lucky enough to only have the fungus on your toe nails, (if you can call that luck), you can hide your toes in your shoes. This does pose some real problems in the summer time when all your friends are swimming and you are sitting on the beach watching, with your shoes on. Toe nail fungus can also cause some real intimacy problems. There are certain situations when you just have to take your shoes and socks off. The exposed fungus nail can be a real turn-off for many people.
If you don't treat the toenail fungus, it will eventually spread to more toes and sooner or later to your finger nails. Now where are you going to hide? Also nail fungus can lead to skin infections and PERMANENT DAMAGE.
If you've been living with nail fungus for a day, you have been living with nail fungus for too long. It is easy to end the embarrassment and humiliation of this ugly problem. But you will need help.
Leucatin Is the ONLY Complete Nail Fungus System in the World
Step 1: STOP THE NAIL FUNGUS: Rid yourself of symptoms! The Leucatin Topical Solution's molecules are less than half the size of the molecules that compose any other topical nail fungus solution. That means Leucatin Topical Solution can penetrate twice as far as a any other solution on the market. Research has shown that the ingredients in Leucatin Topical Solution do not merely sit on your nail to hopefully seep in to your nail bed through your cuticle, but the solution is actually able to penetrate your nail itself, coming into contact with all fungus from the surface to your nail bed and everywhere in between.
Step 2: ELIMINATE THE FUNGUS: Boost your immune system! The ingredients in the Leucatin Anti-Fungal capsules penetrate from the inside to help kill all nail fungus. The Leucatin Anti-Fungal capsules are formulated to help increase your body's natural anti-inflammatory and anti-infection abilities and in turn, increasing your body's ability to fight and kill your fungus that is causing your nail infection.
Leucatin is the only solution of its kind that works both from the inside and the outside to eliminate your nail fungus. Both components of this powerful system go to work right away fighting the fungus that is causing your nails to deteriorate.
Leucatin is a natural herbal product and contains no chemicals. It is manufactured in Selmedica's certified laboratories under the strict guidelines of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Good Manufacturing Practices.
Here is what they have to say about their clinical studies:
We sought out scientists, researchers both funded and independent, studies and tests for the most comprehensive wealth of information available. We ended up working with 28 different Universities in the United States and also internationally, 3 independent testing labs, and over 450 national press and media contacts to look at Leucatin and try to pick it apart. Our own team also performed exhaustive studies - and here's what we found...
99.4% of all people who used Leucatin as directed reported a positive result 93.7% said that their nail fungus symptoms had completely vanished...
The ingredients in Leucatin have been shown to kill nail fungus and eliminate it's symptoms. PLUS, they will boost your immune system to help you stay healthier and resist any new infections.
Unlike prescription medicines currently on the market to kill your nail fungus, Leucatin will not harm your liver or any other internal organ. There are no blood tests required prior to taking this herbal remedy. There are no side effects.

Many people on the hunt for nutritional supplements are concerned about what kind of herbal medicine for cold sicknesses are offered. From the period of November until March, cold season sets in and it can really ruin your day. While there isn't too much of a clear determinant about how to cure a cold, your best bet is to try to ward it off before it even strikes you.
Once you already have the flu, there are herbal remedies, supplements, and vitamins that can help to curb the effects of the bug or hasten its departure, but there's no surefire cure for the common cold. One of the best ways to avoid getting the flu would be to keep the healthiest immune system you possibly can. The stronger your immune system is, the better chance your body will merely brush off pesky bugs. This can be accomplished through the use of many different substances.
Vitamin C is one solution commonly referred to when colds abound. Also, Echinacea has seen much popularity as a cold aid. Beta Glucan is one herbal remedy that helps to boost your immune system to superhuman levels. Beta Glucan stimulates macrophages, which your body uses as a 'first line of defense' against bodily invaders. Beta Glucan is naturally found in grains and oats. Maitaki mushroom extract is another substance that has seen some popularity. It is rumored to raise your white blood cell count, which can be enormously helpful in fighting off foreign bodies. Black Cumin extract is yet another solution, which has many healing and anti-viral properties. It helps to protect healthy cells and produces an enzyme called interferon which fights infections.
Last, but not least, is Aloe Vera. Certain sources of it can be powerful in boosting immune function. Liquid Aloe Vera doesn't offer anywhere near the effects of the concentrated, solid form. Of all of these natural remedies, all are classified as herbs with the exception of Beta Glucan.
Take your choice of these (although a combination has been proven more effective) to help ward off the next flu that comes your way.

There are two types of constipation, organic and functional. Organic constipation is a result of some physical change, obstruction, or distortion in your colon. This type of constipation needs immediate attention from a doctor. We do not cover constipation that occurs from these reasons.
Functional constipation is a result of not following a proper diet, drinking the proper fluids, having good emotional health, and not having the proper lifestyle that promotes good movement of digested foods through the intestines and colon.
Even though there are many conditions, symptoms and definitions describing constipation, constipation simple is,
A condition where the fecal matter traveling through your colon remains too long in your colon before traveling out the rectum.
Constipation is a symptom that tells you your colon is not working properly or you have some underlying gastrointestinal disease you are not aware of.
Constipation is a warning your diet and lifestyle can be leading to some illness or disease in the future. It is a symptom that many people ignore or it is a symptom that many people try to eliminate by using unnatural dangerous laxatives.
Laxatives are probable the worst product you can use when you have constipation. They can become habit-forming if used too long and have some nasty side effects. They have a tendency to create the problem you are trying relieve - constipation.
It is important to use only natural remedies for constipation so you don't continue to upset the natural balance and function of your colon. As you begin to apply some of these remedies, keep in mind that one particular remedy does not work for every person. You may have to make some changes to some of these remedies, such as increasing dosage, adding substances, or trying different substances.
The remedies you choose to use will depend on specific herbs, foods, or nutrients you have, you can buy locally, you can buy on the Internet, nutrients you prefer, or you can afford. Experimenting is part of how you find out what is best for you.
Keep in mind that all remedies you should only be used only for a short time, two to four days and not longer than 2 weeks. They should only be used for the time needed to clear your constipation. Sometimes this might just be one or two times.
There are some herbal combinations you can use longer. These combinations can improve the health of your colon and get your bowels moving.
If you have constipation, I can tell you now the natural balance and function of your colon has been affected. But natural remedies can bring you back into balance.

A New Look at Natural Acne Treatments

There's a confusing array of product claims and treatment methods for acne that make it difficult for acne sufferers to determine their best course of action. The fact that there are several forms of acne, including cystic acne and the common acne vulgaris, complicates the picture. While the medical community does not have a cure for severe acne, there are a variety of products that will subdue moderate cases of acne and provide the sufferer with clear skin once again. Among these effective products are natural acne treatments that provide viable alternatives to the use of antibiotic medicines and ointments.
Natural remedies are derived from plants that have been used for generations because of their medicinal properties. The prestigious National Institutes of Health recently formed the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Health to evaluate the efficacy of herbal remedies by funding controlled scientific studies. Herbal remedies can be effective natural acne treatments.
Antibiotics are frequently prescribed for acne because there is a known bacterial component to cases of acne but certain herbs like Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolio) have known antibacterial properties as well. A soap made from Echinacea and other herbal ingredients is a viable antibiotic facial cleanser that helps fight and clear acne. This type of soap is also used for eczema, psoriasis, and acne rosacea. Scientific studies show that Echinacea helps the body provide the proper enzymes at the cellular level to protect cells against invasion by bacteria. Echinacea's ability to aid in wound healing is beneficial not only for acne but also for insect bites and burns.
Echinacea is the hardy purple coneflower that is a staple of roadside plantings and home gardens. A more exotic and expensive herbal acne treatment is tea tree oil. There are over 300 species of tea tree but only one species (Melaleuca Alteronifolia) found in New South Wales, Australia is known to have antibacterial properties. Tea tree oil is derived from the leaves of the tree and is four to five times stronger than household disinfectants in killing bacteria. At the same time, tea tree oil is gentle to the skin. Tea tree oil is effective in killing the bacteria even in pus and will cause the body to eliminate pus from inside a pimple. Tea tree oil also acts as a mild local anesthetic which reduces discomfort and also helps to eliminate the red irritation from the skin, improving appearance and reducing acne social problems. Tea tree oil is readily available from herbal suppliers and is simply applied to the affected area with a Q-tip. Tea tree oil is used sparingly.
Witch hazel is not just a brand name but an actual herb (Hamamelis virginiana) that is still recommended as a topical astringent and natural acne remedy. When using these topical acne treatments it is important to be gentle. While it seems to make sense to attempt to vigorously scrub away the offending acne, both medical doctors and herbalists recommend a gentle face washing with even just the fingers as the best approach. Scrubbing merely dries the skin and causes it to produce more oils that are implicated as one of the causes of acne. Don't over-wash either; specialists recommend washing the face just twice a day.
Along with topical products, herbal dietary supplements can be beneficial as a natural acne treatment as well. Burdock root (Arctium lappa) has long been used to treat boils and abscesses and is an acne treatment. One of the reported properties of burdock root is that it will bring problem-causing agents out of the bloodstream, thus potentially making a condition seem to worsen rather than improve. However, the theory behind its use states that it is simply eliminating toxic elements from the body and providing healing properties. When used as an acne treatment, herbalists recommend that topical burdock root be applied as well as taking a supplement that contains burdock. Burdock is typically combined with dandelion root (Taraxacum officinale) and golden seal root (Hydrastis Canadensis). Golden seal root was once used to prevent pitting of the skin caused by smallpox. Herbalists also recommend red clover (Trifolium pratense). All of these ingredients are implicated in improving skin conditions. Be sure to take these supplements only in the dosage indicated by the manufacturer or your herbalist.
Diet plays an important role in overall health and maintenance of healthy skin. A balanced diet that is rich in vegetables and fruits provides the necessary vitamins and minerals to support clear skin. A diet containing lots of vitamin A may lower sebum production and excessive sebum is one of the contributing causes of acne. The various B vitamins, especially vitamin B-6, can be beneficial as it is needed for proper metabolism of steroid hormones and sexual hormones are implicated in acne. Zinc is promoted as a cure for acne but there seem to be as many studies against zinc supplements as there are ones that promote zinc as an acne treatment. These vitamins are available as supplements but again, more isn't always better; follow label dosing instructions.
There are plenty of old wives tales surrounding diet and acne outbreaks. Chocolate and fried foods have long been blamed for acne but there is no evidence to support this. However, the link between acne and dairy products is being subjected to scientific studies. A study published in the medical journal Dermatology in early 2005 found a link between teen acne and consumption of dairy products. For those whose acne is aggravated by dairy consumption, eliminating dairy products promotes clear skin. Another misconception is that acne is caused by dirt because the pores are clogged. Thinking that dirt is a cause of acne prompts sufferers to possibly over-wash the face and further aggravate the acne condition. Wearing make-up doesn't cause acne either; look for modern cosmetics that are non-comedogenic (won't clog pores), oil-free (water-based) and hypoallergenic (no added fragrance).
Acne isn't just a teen-age condition and adults suffer from acne as well. The natural acne remedies have provided relief from acne symptoms for people of all ages.

Cold Sore Remedy - Mint Tea

A cold sore remedy proven very effective, as well as pleasant to use, is mint tea. Many times I've seen a cold sore completely healed in as little as 7 days using the mint tea cold sore remedy described in this article.
As with any cold sore remedy I write about, I'm offering this cold sore remedy to you for information purposes only. It's a cold sore remedy that has worked well for many others.
In no way is this cold sore remedy presented as medical advice. Nothing takes the place of a one-on-one relationship with a health professional.
Keep in mind also - the best cold sore remedy is one that's applied topically. A cold sore is primarily an external problem and is easily treated this way. You may hear of a variety of vitamins or prescription medications that are useful as an internal cold sore remedy. These do sometimes help. But, the simple and direct approach will always give you the very best results.
This is true with a cold sore or any other problem in life.
Mint is a very powerful cold sore remedy because it has strong anti-viral properties. Mint also has a very soothing effect, which has made it a favorite with many folks who've written me.
But first, let's look at the "universal" cold sore remedy - ice.
Ice has been used as a cold sore remedy for centuries. Today ice is readily available anywhere at any time. Even a cold can of soda works as a cold sore remedy, when held to the sore.
The replication process of the herpes virus creates the cold sore. Ice, when applied to an emerging cold sore, discourages the herpes virus from replicating. The herpes virus hates cold. Applying ice or any cold object will stall the herpes virus from creating that hideous sore. And sometimes even send the herpes virus back into hibernation.
As a cold sore remedy, combining the ice method with mint is many times more effective.
Mint is very easy to find. The form we use is mint tea bags. These are available anywhere you find herbal teas. If the mint is combined with other herbs, that will work fine also. Just make sure the mint is primary. Mint can also be easily grown in a window pot if you want to try it fresh. I'll talk about a special cold sore remedy using fresh mint in just a moment.
This is how we turn mint tea into a very effective cold sore remedy.
Taking 20 oz. of bottled water and 5 tea bags (about one tea bag per 4 oz. of water), we make a strong batch of mint tea. Then freeze the wet tea bags.
Using the frozen tea bags in place of ice, we hold the tea bag on the cold sore area for about 10 minutes at a time. About 3 times per hour works well.
With this frozen mint cold sore remedy, you get the comforting and healing effects of ice. Plus, as the bag melts, you are applying a very strong anti-viral medication. This will kill thousands of herpes viruses.
Additionally, you can supercharge this cold sore remedy by sipping the tea. Also, apply the mint tea liquid to the sore with a cotton ball or paper towel. Now you have an internal as well as an external cold sore remedy.
This is also a perfect cold sore remedy for those rare people who get a cold sore inside the mouth. It works well for canker sores too. As a cold sore remedy, or for canker sores, you can use the tea as mouthwash. Swish it around for a minute or so, then swallow it for the internal benefits.
A variation of this cold sore remedy, we've used successfully, is to freeze the tea liquid. This works best for us using an ice cube tray that makes smaller ice cubes. This is a little messier as the cube melts. If you use fresh grown or bulk mint, then you won't have the tea bags to freeze. In that case, this may be one way to use your mint as a cold sore remedy.
One final note on using mint as a cold sore remedy.
Using this cold sore remedy, you may not want to, or can't, sit and hold the ice or frozen tea bags to your lip. If you're on the go, here's a very convenient and powerful way to use mint as a cold sore remedy.
You can quickly make an excellent cold sore remedy by crushing fresh mint leaves into a paste. If you don't wish to grow your own, mint is often available fresh or dried at your local health food store. With dried mint, add some water to reconstitute it and it will make a fine paste too. As you make the paste, mix in a little baking soda. This raises the pH level, which the herpes virus also hates.
Now you have a cold sore remedy you can use when traveling or at work. And, if made with fresh mint, the mint will be even stronger than in the dried tea form because you aren't heating it.
I hope you, as so many others have, find this to be an excellent, cheap and powerful cold sore remedy.

Acne is not caused by dirt, though careful attention to hygiene helps to keep inflammation at bay. A trial done in Singapore a few years ago points to acne being caused by the failure of the body to break down and metabolize oil in the body. Why does this happen?
According to an article published by Lit-Hung Leung, MD in the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine Vol. 12, Number 2, 1997, when the particular vitamin that is responsible for the job of metabolizing the oil is needed by the body for a different function - such as the development of the sex organs, eg, - a deficiency is created and there is not enough of this vitamin to do both jobs. This is why acne often shows up at puberty.
While deficiency syndromes are by and large dismissed by the main stream medical profession, Linus Pauling, in his book, How to Live Longer and Feel Better, challenges the assumption that vitamins are not needed in large amounts and provides proof through his studies of animals that optimal amounts of vitamins are needed for optimal health. For instance, he believes that Vitamin C is needed in far greater amounts by the body than most health practitioners would believe.
In the trial conducted in Singapore, pantothenic acid was given to acne sufferers at the rate of 10 grams a day divided into four equal doses. At the same time the patients were required to apply a pantothenic cream to the acne. Within a few days there was a marked reduction in the amount of oil, or sebum being secreted and after 2 weeks the acne started to heal visibly, with less new pimples appearing. In most cases, the acne was completely healed by the end of 2 months, and flare-ups were reduced considerably.
An unexpected bonus was that the enlarged pores of the face began to shrink and the skin became much finer. It was found that if the patient was an adolescent, a maintenance dose was needed until the sexual characteristics had been fully developed. That pantothenic acid is found to be present in all tissues of the body is an indication of its importance. VitaCure B5 ClearSkin is the acne product that resulted from the above trials.
Benzoyl peroxide is the main ingredient found in many over-the-counter products for treating acne. The label should be read carefully to find out how much of this chemical is actually in the product. When trying these for the first time, it is advisable to start off with the lowest dose, or skin irritation could occur, exacerbating the problem. 2.5% is usually the lowest dose and this can also cause the skin to become dry and irritated, but this problem will mostly clear up after a few days. These products are meant to be used over the whole area affected by acne, so don't just dab it on single zits.
Zinc gluconate is another herbal type of remedy for acne. It should be taken orally.
If after two months of trying herbal products the acne has not improved, a doctor's advice should be sought.

Herbs have been embraced for centuries. Herbal remedies offer solutions to many different types of symptoms in the body. From the common cold, to acne, toothache, and even baldness-herbs can enrich our overall well-being and appearance. For years many men and women have relied on herbal remedies to prevent premature hair loss and stress-induced hair loss. The following remedies are some of the most popular around the world:
Green Tea: Drink several cups a day, as this tea contains the enzyme 5 Alpha Reductase. What does it do? It converts male testosterone into DHT. Men who have pale pattern baldness swear by this natural remedy. Seeing is believing, what do you have to lost? Drink up. Cheers!
Ginko Biloba: By increasing circulation to the brain and skin-with this herb, you can deliver more well-needed nutrients to the hair's natural follicles. Spread 120 - 160 mg of the dry extract onto the scalp in a period of three dosages.
Saw Palmetto: The hair loss Treatment of choice by males. It protects a man's prostate from cancer and studies show it encourages hair growth. Take it in capsule form twice weekly. It's most potent taken in its natural form (extracted from berries-not dried berries).
Stinging Nettle: Known to prevent hair loss, men rely on stinging nettle at the first sight of thinning, or slight balding. Take a capsule which contains 50-100 mg a day to keep hair loss away.
Pygeum: If used properly (60-500 mg per day in capsule form) the effects of Pygeum are much like those of green tea. Use this herb for treatment of male pattern hair loss or prostate problems.
He Shou Wu: Embraced by the Chinese, this herbal remedy has been known to reduce the effects of hair loss, as it's been said to delay the process. This herb can be taken in tea-form or in a capsule.
Before scientists started creating hair loss topical ointments in laboratories, these herbal remedies were relied on by many men (maybe even an ancestor of yours!). While there are many sceptics, who say that herbal treatments are laughable, others beg to differ. What does it come down to? What works for some, may not work for others. Herbs are safe and practical if taken in their proper dosages. Perhaps this is why many men are eager to experiment with them. Inhairit some of these and other only high quality herbal ingredients in it's unique formula designed to slow thinning hair.

There is no correlation between people suffering from ADHD and their accomplishments in life. Albert Einstein, Nelson Rockefeller, Galileo, and Thomas Edison are just some of the few famous people who suffer with ADHD.
ADHD can be treated with new drug called Focalin XR. ADHD is more prevalent in boys than girls. There are three types of ADHD, namely predominantly inattentive type, predominantly hyperactive/ impulsive type and a combination of both.
As the name implies, the predominantly inattentive type has symptoms of inattention i.e. absentmindedness, distractibility, a short attention span, and difficulty organizing things. The person suffering from predominantly hyperactive / impulsive ADHA has symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity i.e. unable to be seated in one place for a prolonged period, difficulty for waiting his/her turn. In the combined type, both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity is observed.
After dinner walks, playing in the yard and other outside activities reduces ADHD symptoms. Your diet is also a factor in treating ADHD symptoms. The brand of cookie, potato chip, and ice cream you select in the grocery shop, and the vegetable or fruit you prefer will have a direct effect on your health, ability, and behavior. The products you buy in the grocery shop may contain some chemicals that activate irritability or hyperactivity.
The holistic approach with naturopathic drugs proved to be more effective than the strong and addictive psychiatric drugs (Ritalin, Concerta, and Adderall) in the ADHD treatment. The herbal remedies are used to treat the symptoms gently and effectively.
Common herbal remedies for the treatment of ADHD are Ginkgo biloba, Scuttellaria laterifolia (skull cap), Matricaria recutita(German chamomile), Centella asiatica( Gotu cola) Avina sativa( Green oats), Utrica urens ( Umbabazane in Africa) and Aspalathus linearis ( Rooibos). A natural remedy is less detrimental to your overall health than that of prescription drugs. Children who are using psychiatric drugs such as Ritalin, Concreta and Adderall may develop an addiction and other side effects to their health.
People with ADHD may have other related conditions such as learning disorders, ophthalmic convergence insufficiency, conduct disorder, and antisocial personality disorder. ADHD patients are more likely to have a family member with ADHD or one of the related conditions, implying that ADHD may be genetic.

You may be a new parent or a parent of five kids, but when your baby is crying nonstop you will worry and take him immediately to the doctor many times simply to find out your baby has colic and there is nothing the doctor can do. Most doctors will simply tell you to wait it out and around three months of age your baby's colic should take care of itself. This can be a long time to wait when your baby is miserable and crying incessantly. So, if you aren't the sit around and wait type then you might consider some home remedies for your baby. Remember, however, that the following home remedies will not work for all babies and you may need to try several before finding the best one for your baby.
A great and simple home remedy that just might soothe the colic in your baby is a massage. There are many massage techniques that help reduce discomfort and aid in the passing of gas which you can learn online, from books, or even a massage therapist. Most of these techniques are easy and do not require any experience in massage at all. Generally massage is a positive way to treat your child's colic because it is believe to treat the cause of colic rather than the symptoms resulting in a happier and healthier baby, not to mention parents. Different babies respond to massage in different ways, some very successfully and others not at all. However, it is certainly worth a try because if it works massage is an easy way to help your baby pass gas and avoid the pains of colic. Give massage a try and see if it helps your baby.
Yet another home remedy for colic is herbal tea. Most parents are unaware of this home remedy, but it really does work for many babies. Also, most doctors believe it is perfectly safe to administer up to four ounces of herbal tea to an infant on a daily basis. You should of course check with your doctor first, but if you get the go ahead you will find peppermint, chamomile, ginger, and catnip the most successful at alleviating colic pain and discomfort. Remember, however, that when you give your baby herbal teas you should stick to their regular meal schedule as well because they need the nutrition of a meal that just is not found in herbal tea.
You may also find burping beneficial in reducing colic or helping your baby feel better. Most parents feed their baby and then burp, however doing this with a colic prone baby means more air will enter the baby's tiny digestive system and more gas will be created that causes severe discomfort. So, when it is close to feeding time try burping your child before, during, and after to help reduce gas. Your baby might not like this at first, but it is worthwhile if it reduces the amount of discomfort your baby is in.
Another easy home remedy for a colicky baby is a warm bath, warm water bottle, or other warming device that will heat your baby's stomach but not get too hot and burn baby. It is amazing, but warm water generally relaxes the intestines allowing the baby to pass gas and ease discomfort. It seems amazing that something as easy as a warm bath can ease the discomfort of colic, but many times it does the trick!
Your baby can't help the discomfort of colic and you as a parent should remember that your baby is crying out from pain and discomfort. So try and remain calm and try some of these home remedies to help your baby feel better and not suffer from colic so much.

Herbs have powerful medicinal properties as well as vast culinary uses. Seasoning your foods with garlic, parsley and oregano might seem like second nature but did you realize that by using these herbs you could be helping your health?
Although herbs are probably much safer than most pills you buy at the pharmacy, they can have side effects and need to be taken cautiously especially in conjunction with other medicines. Some herbs can cause reactions with medicines or render them useless. Therefore, you should consult a health care professional before undertaking any herbal treatment.
That being said, herbs, when taken carefully can often help relieve symptoms without the harsh effects that drugs have on your body. Some of our favorite herbs, that have great healing effects and taste good too are listed below.
Garlic:Garlic is a potent herb that has anti fungal and anti bacterial properties. It can be used to treat cuts and infections. It also has great antioxidant properties and is believed to help lower cholesterol as well as help with high blood pressure, cancer and diabetes. Garlic can be used to flavor most any meal but is most pleasurable in Italian dishes. To get the the most benefits from garlic, however it should be eaten raw - crush some garlic cloves and let them sit for 10 minutes before you eat them. If taken in excess, garlic may cause bloating, skin irritation, post operative bleeding, upset stomach, occupational asthma and body odor. If you have a bleeding disorder it is best to stay away from eating garlic.
Green Tea Extract:Green tea is well known to be a powerful antioxidant and health booster. It can reduce cholesterol as well as help prevent vascular clotting and is said to aid in the prevention of both heart disease and cancer. It also has antimicrobial properties which protect the digestive and respiratory systems as well as help to boost your immune system. It is said you should drink 3 to 5 cups a day and you can also take green tea in pill form. Too much green tea can cause dizziness, heart palpitations, headaches, irritability, loss of appetite, insomnia, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Horse Chestnut:Horse chestunut is another herb that is full of antioxidants and helps support our circulatory system. It helps to stregthen the capillary cells and can help treat varicosity, phlebitis and hemorrhoids. It is also said to be excellent for wrinkle prevention.
Milk Thistle:Milk Thistle can help protect your liver as well as being used as a remedy for asthma, anthrax, bladder stones, dropsy, fever, piles, spasms, hepatitis and spleen and uterine problems. When takin in excess it can cause headache, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, rash, headache, joint pain and impotence. Do not eat milk thistle if you are pregnant or nursing.
Oregano Oil:Oregano oil has anti-microbial and anti-oxidant properties and can be used to treat anything from an earache to athletes foot. It can be soothing to the digestive system and can help relieve gas and bloating as well as urinary problems, swollen glands, rheumatoid arthritis, bronchitis and insect bites. Oregano oil is also a powerful pain killer - some say as powerful as morphine.
Parsley:Did you think parsley was just a garnish? Not so, this herb is a natural diuretic and packed full of nutrition. It is loaded with Vitamins C, A and B as well as iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorous. In addition to boosting the immune system it is helpful for healing problems with the urinary system and kidneys and can be a great help in relieving water retention. One way to get lost of parsley in it's best form (raw) is to cut a bunch up and mix it in with your salads.
Super Kelp:While you can't grow it in your garden, Super kelp is an herb from the sea that is full of natural iodine and also has other helpful trace elements. Sometimes known as Sea Kelp or Sea Wrack, it is often a main ingredient in cures for obesity. It can also help cleanse your kidneys and stimulate your pituitary gland and thyroid to produce growth hormones.

The liver is involved in thousands of biochemical mechanisms making it second only to the brain in importance and complexity. Natural health practitioners are also acutely aware of the detrimental effects on the liver of modern living, with its chemicals, excessive fat intake, pesticides, hormones, and stress. This suggests that we as a culture are in need of liver support. You should consider liver support supplementation if you:
* Have a history of a Fatty Liver* Consume Alcohol* Consume Tobacco Products* Have been taking Medications/Drugs* Are exposed to Environmental Toxins or Chemicals or Second Hand Smoke* Have a history of Liver or Gall Bladder Problems
Dandelion:Dandelion root enhances bile flow, thus improving conditions such as liver congestion, bile duct inflammation, hepatitis, gallstones, and jaundice. Dandelion increases bile flow by affecting the liver directly to cause an increase in bile production and flow to the gallbladder, and exerting a direct effect on the gallbladder by causing a contraction and release of stored bile. Dandelion's hepatic tonic effect may be attributable to the high choline content.
Milk Thistle:Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) has been used since Greco-Roman times as an herbal remedy for a variety of ailments, particularly liver problems. Several scientific studies suggest that active substances in milk thistle (particularly silymarin) protect the liver from damage caused by viruses, toxins, alcohol, and certain drugs such as acetaminophen (a common over the counter medication used for headaches and pain; acetaminophen, also called paracetamol, can cause liver damage if taken in large quantities or by people who drink alcohol regularly.)
Many professional herbalists recommend milk thistle extract for the prevention and/or treatment of various liver disorders including viral hepatitis, fatty liver associated with long term alcohol use, and liver damage from drugs and industrial toxins such as carbon tetrachloride.

It's a simple fact that man-made pharmaceuticals haven't been around forever. Long before there were synthetic drugs, people were healing others using natural ingredients. In fact, many modern manufactured drugs actually use the knowledge gained through years of herbal healing in their mix. So the concept of using a herbal remedy isn't crazy. It's not voodoo or witchcraft either. If used correctly, herbal remedies can be a great way to treat a number of ailments without chemicals.
Keep in mind though that not all conditions should be treated at home using herbal remedies. There simply are some cases that require medical advice, testing, synthetic drugs and even surgery to correct. But, for illnesses or conditions that aren't terribly serious, herbal remedies may in fact work very well and in some cases better than synthetic drugs.
For those conditions that can be treated using herbs, there are a number of different known remedies. The ingredients found in many herbs are also used in name-brand drugs, too, so the science behind some of the usages is solid. While one herb may work on a number of conditions another may work better, so it's a good idea to read up and study before deciding green tea or aloe can cure everything.
Here is a listing of some different herbs and the ailments they've been known to help:
Aloe: This plant is used for helping with stomach problems and also helping with digestion and circulation. It is best known for its abilities to help with skin conditions and ease the pain of burns. It can be purchased in plant form and you will find aloe is an ingredient in many over the counter drugs as well.
Bayberry: This is used for detoxification and also to help stop a cold from forming.
Black cohosh: Native Americans used this for snakebites. It's also known to help with sore throats, skeletal problems and more.
Cayenne: This pepper, commonly used in foods, is thought to help with circulation. It also is helped to assist with the digestive system as well.
Chamomile: This herb is famous for its use in tea. Its properties are thought to calm the nerves and aid in digestion. It's also believed to help with respiratory tract problems and ease menstrual cramps.
Garlic: This may or may not ward off vampires, but it is famous for helping with circulation, disease resistance, stomach problems and more. It is considered by many to be a natural antibiotic as well.
Ginkgo biloba: This botanical is thought to aid in memory and helps slow the effects of aging. It is a powerful anti-oxidant.
Keep in mind the above list is just a sampling of the herbs known to have medicinal properties. Medicine and herbology have gone hand in hand for years and although synthetics have come on the market, it doesn't mean that old fashion remedies don't have their place. In fact, many herbal "cures" can do the trick quite well and help some people where all other options have failed.

Now a days, there is a variety of essential oils, roots, and herbs available to support healthy living. These natural products can be used for treating ailments, flavoring your food, skin care, create perfumes, and manufacture environmentally safe cleaning products.
If you do not have room for a garden, a few herbs planted by a sunny window are enough to get you started. Subsequently, all you will need then are some essential oils and you are ready to embark on a wonderful journey to natural herbal remedies and medicine.
Essential oils versus blended oils.
The first to consider is the essential oils. Only the purest oils will do for therapeutic purposes. Do not be fooled into thinking that you are purchasing pure oil when in fact it is a blend of several oils. Blended oils are acceptable for fragrance such as perfuming a room, but pure oils are necessary for medicinal intent.
A general guide to the purity of oil is its price. Pure oils are normally more expensive. For instance, common oils such as lavender and geranium are less expensive than frankincense and carnation oil. Therefore, it is advisable to become familiar with essential oil prices and then rely on this knowledge when purchasing oils. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. In addition, a price list from a reputable dealer is a valuable resource when buying essentials oils.
Typically, pure oils cannot be applied directly to the skin and must be mixed with a base oil to lessen their strength. Base oils such as almond oil or wheat germ oil are generally used for this purpose. Base oils are generally derived from seeds, nuts, or vegetables.
Basic oils and natural remedies.
Lavender, without a doubt, is one of the most useful and desirable oils. It will work wonders on cuts, bruises and burns, and promotes sleep and relaxation.
The Tea Tree and Eucalyptus oils are useful for treating a variety of respiratory ailments. These are excellent medication for colds and coughs. These oils can be massaged into the chest or burned in an oil burner to help clear the airways and prevent congestion. Tea Tree oil is a natural antiseptic and can be dabbed on cuts, bites and stings. It is often used to treat spots and pimples and when diluted with water, acts as a mouth gargle (keep in-mind it should never be swallowed).
Geranium oil with its characteristic perfume and pain relieving properties is a basic antiseptic. This herbal remedy should be part of your essential oil and natural herbal remedies garden.
Peppermint oil treats digestive upsets and may be used for breath freshening.
Patchouli and Ylang-ylang oils in an oil burner can perfume a room and add a sense of ambience. Orange oil mixed with Cinnamon oil is a pleasant winter scent that brings to mind seasonal holiday smells. Besides their perfume qualities, all four of these oils have other properties. Patchouli treats eczema and dandruff. Ylang-ylang is reputed to relieve stress, palpitations, and high blood pressure. Orange is used in natural remedies for depression and nervous tension. Cinnamon is excellent for warts and viral infections.
Thyme and Rosemary are considered herbs and can be grown in pots and used when needed. Both of these herbs can be used to create oils or flavor food. Thyme and Rosemary are also antiseptics and can be used in skin care preparations.
Lemon oil and fresh lemons will purify water. When lemon is mixed with honey, it is an effective herbal remedies for colds and flu. Lemon and white vinegar are highly effective cleaning agents that can be used for domestic cleaning tasks without damaging the environment. White vinegar is a natural disinfectant or mix it with water to clean windows and wooden floors.
If you want to keep the insects away this summer, Citronella oil or Garlic will do. Add a capsule of garlic to your dog's food and your dog will not be bothered by fleas. You could also soak a soft dog collar in Citronella to keep fleas and mosquitoes at bay.
Garlic helps to promote a healthy immune system. When the weather turns cold and the viruses begin to circulate, adding garlic to your diet will leave you less susceptible. In fact, most of the oils and herbs listed above are effective in helping to prevent many common winter illnesses.
If you are looking for natural herbal remedies or nature friendly products, the oils and herbal remedies recommended above should help you get started.

The Whole Truth About Natural Acne Treatment

Acne can happen to anyone. It shows up primarily in the face and can cause embarrassment and even avoidance of going out in public. Some people only experience light, occasional break-outs. Unfortunately for others, this problem can go on for years and requires treatment. There are several choices when it comes to healing yours. A dermatologist is recommended for severe or frequent blemishes. Natural Acne Treatment is the ideal remedy for milder cases.
Natural Acne treatment is simple. Changing your diet or taking herbs and vitamins to cleanse and provide additional nutrition could be enough to clear your skin up.
You should eliminate sugars, oils, and fats from your diet as much as possible. They are not part of a good balanced diet and are all unhealthy to begin with. Drinking water instead of sugary soda and eating a vegetable snack instead of you usual chips is not a difficult change to make. The healthier you are overall will reflect the health of your skin.
It has been debated that diet has no effect on acne. Diet alone is not a suitable natural acne treatment. However, modifying your diet in addition to taking certain vitamins can clear up your skin.
Taking certain vitamins is a great natural acne treatment used by many people. Zinc can prevent acne from ever occurring. It also heals existing blemishes. Vitamin A in low doses reduces the production of your skin's natural oil, called sebum. Certain herbal blends can also help to benefit your body and your skin.
The advantages to natural acne treatment are that you avoid ever having to see a dermatologist, your body will benefit from healthier eating, and you are not exposing your skin to harsh chemicals. Visiting a dermatologist to take care of your acne can get expensive. It usually requires many follow-up visits and paying for prescriptions. This can also be time consuming and overall just not worth it if your acne is not severe enough to actually require it. Not consuming greasy foods will keep your system clean, which is beneficial to your overall health as well as your skin. Typical acne medicines contain ingredients that can cause your skin to be sensitive to sunlight or even worsen your condition.
Modifying your diet and taking vitamins are not the only options that you have as natural acne treatment. You could suffer from stress-induced acne. Ways to reduce stress in your life can differ from person to person because everyone gets stressed out by different things. Exercising and getting plenty of rest could help to calm the stress in your life. Perhaps taking a walk or practicing yoga would help you to relax and clear your mind to be stress-free. A life without stress could be a life without suffering from acne. Natural treatment may not be the answer to your acne, depending on the cause of it. Experimenting is an easy and painless method to try, and it could save you a lot of money if it is right for you.

Ginseng is the most famous Chinese herb. It is the most widely recognized plant used in traditional medicine. Various forms of ginseng have been used in medicine for more than 7000 years. Several species grow around the world, and though some are preferred for specific benefits, all are considered to have similar properties as an effective general rejuvenator.
Ginseng is a slow growing perennial herb (reaches about 2 feet tall) native to the mountainous area of north eastern China, Korea and far eastern regions of Russia. The older the root, the greater the concentration of ginsenosides, the active chemical compounds, thus the more potent the ginseng becomes. Ginseng roots can live longer than hundreds of years. Ginseng has been cultivated extensively in China, Korea, and Japan, and Russia. Ginseng starts flowering in fourth year, and the roots take 4-6 years to reach maturity. Ginseng is a protected herb in China and Russia: exporting ginseng seeds is banned in China, and harvesting wild ginseng is illegal in Russia. Natural white ginseng is often steam- processed to produce "red ginseng" with different, higher medicinal potency.
It is used to reduce the effects of stress, improve performance, boost energy levels, enhance memory, and stimulate the immune system. Oriental medicine has deemed ginseng a necessary element in all their best prescriptions, and regards it as prevention and a cure. It is said to remove both mental and bodily fatigue, cure pulmonary complaints, dissolve tumors and reduce the effects of age.
Ginseng is native to China, Russia, North Korea, Japan, and some areas of North America. It was first cultivated in the United States in the late 1800's. It is difficult to grow and takes 4-6 years to become mature enough to harvest. The roots are called Jin-chen, meaning 'like a man,' in reference to their resemblance to the shape of the human body.
Native North Americans considered it one of their most sacred herbs and add it to many herbal formulas to make them more potent. The roots can live for over 100 years.
Ginseng contains vitamins A, B-6 and the mineral Zinc, which aids in the production of thymic hormones, necessary for the functioning of the defense system. The main active ingredients of ginseng are the more than 25 saponin triterpenoid glycosides called "ginsenosides". These steroid-like ingredients provide the adaptogenic properties that enable ginseng to balance and counter the effects of stress. The glycosides appear to act on the adrenal glands, helping to prevent adrenal hypertrophy and excess corticosteroid production in response to physical, chemical or biological stress.
Studies done in China showed that ginsenosides also increase protein synthesis and activity of neurotransmitters in the brain. Ginseng is used to restore memory, and enhance concentration and cognitive abilities, which may be impaired by improper blood supply to the brain.
Ginseng helps to maintain excellent body functions. Siberian ginseng has been shown to increase energy, stamina, and help the body resist viral infections and environmental toxins. Research has shown specific effects that support the central nervous system, liver function, lung function and circulatory system.
Animal studies have shown that ginseng extracts stimulate the production of interferons, increase natural killer cell activity, lower cholesterol and decrease triglyceride levels. Men have used the herb to improve sexual function and remedy impotence. Ginseng is believed to increase estrogen levels in women and is used to treat menopausal symptoms.
It is also used for diabetes, radiation and chemotherapy protection, colds, chest problems, to aid in sleep, and to stimulate the appetite.
Korean Red Ginseng is also known by the names Asian Ginseng, Asiatic Ginger, and Chinese Ginseng. Korean Red Ginseng is a deciduous perennial shrub whose fleshy root requires 4-6 years of cultivation to reach maturity. Korean Red Ginseng is now used as a natural preventive, restorative remedy and valued for its adaptogenic properties. Korean Red Ginseng is considered most suitable for males and for older people. Used for centuries in China, Korean Red Ginseng was believed to be and anti-aging herb. By equalizing the system levels in the body, Korean Red Ginseng has been used to lower cholesterol, balance the metabolism, increase energy levels, and stimulate the immune system.
Korean White Ginseng is an adaptogen having yang properties and an arousing and stimulating metabolic effect on the central nervous system, brain, head, and blood vessels. It may benefit blood sugar levels, histamine levels, inflammation, stress levels, mental and physical abilities, impotency, anemia, artery hardening, depression, diabetes, ulcers, edema, immune and lung function, appetite, libido and may offer protection against radiation exposure and easement of cocaine withdrawal.
North American White Ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) is believed to give a cooling effect to the body. This cooling, energy giving, endurance enhancing factor is believed to be the most beneficial for our fast paced, stressful world.
Siberian ginseng is a distinct plant with different active chemical components. Prized for its ability to restore vigor, increase longevity, enhance overall health, and stimulate both a healthy appetite and a good memory, it is widely used in Russia to help the body adapt to stressful conditions and to enhance productivity.
Benefits * reduce the effects of stress * boost energy levels * assists with mental and body fatigue

Statistics show that thirty-three percent of Americans use herbal products each year. There are many people seeking herbal remedies to gain more control over the health decisions they face.
With all the publicity of both positive and negative reports on herbal remedies, it leaves one wondering who to believe. By taking heed to the following guidelines you can learn to be a wiser consumer of alternative therapies such as herbal remedies.
Did you know that nearly all vitamins have herbal origins? There are also many conventional medicines in use today that have herbal origins. Herbal plants have been used as medicine for centuries. But... on the other hand, everything that is natural is not necessarily safe.
Herbal remedies can be a valuable addition to your personal wellness. However, just as with conventional means, certain guidelines are advisable. Knowledge is the best defense against suffering from misuse of botanical blends.
One of the most important things to learn concerning herbal remedies is to always be sure to obtain them through reputable sources, such as a pharmacy, or a nutritional supplement company with high-quality and manufacturing standards. Be sure to look for other evidence that a manufacturer has quality control standards, such as lot numbers and expiration dates.
Many reported problems in relation to herbal remedies are due to poor quality products, overuse, misuse, allergic reactions, or adverse reactions when taken along with prescription and over the counter drugs.
Before using an herbal remedy make sure you read the supplement label and follow the dosage instructions. If you suspect a supplement is causing a side effect, you should discontinue using it immediately.
Most herbal remedies are generally regarded by the (FDA) Food and Drug Administration to be safe. These herbs can be used safely when taken in the appropriate manner. But these very same herbs may present risk to patients with certain conditions or who are taking certain kinds of medications.
That is why it is always a good idea to consult your physician before taking any herbal supplements especially if you have a chronic disease, or are taking any kind of drugs. Herbal supplements should not be taken by women during pregnancy, breast-feeding or in children under twelve, unless they are specifically recommended and monitored closely by your physician.
Another reason to discuss the use of herbal remedies with your physician is to avoid possible complications. There are certain drugs and herbs that should not be taken together because the herb may increase or decrease the effect of the prescribed drug.
Patients undergoing certain types of surgical procedures and/or general anesthesia should discontinue herbal therapy about two weeks before such procedures. If you are scheduled for surgery, tell the surgeon and anesthesiologist what you are taking. The reason for this is because some supplements can make you bleed easier, cause your blood sugar levels to fall too low, or intensify the sedative effect of anesthesia.
If you are faced with emergency surgery, remember to take your supplements along with all the drugs you take to the hospital to show the anesthesiologist. Your pharmacist will also need to know before filling your prescriptions so they can prevent possible drug interactions. Your pharmacist is well trained and knowledgeable of herb and drug interactions that can prevent complications.
Herbal Remedies have been given rave reviews by many people. But keep in mind that everyone's makeup and genetic DNA is different. Herbs that work for 95 out of 100 people may not work for you. But that is also true for chemically manufactured drugs prescribed by your doctor.
Although herbs are natural- remember they are very potent, and their usage should be closely monitored. Hopefully with this knowledge in your arsenal it will put you one giant step ahead in your quest for optimum health.

Is Natural Acne Treatment Right For You?

Acne can happen to you. In fact it can happen to any of us. Usally acne starts up in the face and can cause embarrassment and even avoidance of going out in public.
Some people only experience light, occasional break-outs. Unfortunately for others, this problem can go on for years and requires treatment.
There are several choices when it comes to healing your acne.
Start drinking water instead of sugary soda and eat a vegetable snack instead of you usual chips. You will notice that this is not a difficult change to make. Being overall healthier will reflect the health of your skin.
Vitamin A in small doses reduces the production of your skin's natural oil, called sebum. Certain herbal blends are also of help to your body and your skin.
Avoiding greasy foods will keep your system clean, which is beneficial to your general health as well as your skin. Proper acne medicines include ingredients that can cause your skin to be sensitive to sunlight or even diminish your condition. Changing your diet and taking vitamins are not the only available possibilities as natural acne treatment.
You could suffer from stress-induced acne. Alternatives to reduce stress in your life are different from person to person because everyone gets stressed out by different things. Exercising and having plenty of rest can be of help to calm the stress in your life. Maybe taking a walk or practicing yoga would help you to relax and clear your mind to be stress-free. A life without stress could be a life without suffering from acne.
Perhaps natural treatment may not be the right answer to your acne, depending on the origin of it. Experimenting is an easy and painless method to try, and it could save you a lot of money if it is right for you.

Herbs For Natural Sleep - Valerian Root

Insomnia has been around for a very long time and affects the lives of millions of individuals from just about every country causing mild irritation to some individuals and seriously affecting the quality of life for a large number of us.
Finding a cure for insomnia and returning to night after night of natural sleep is not always an easy matter however, for many people, the solution lies in using time-honored traditional herbal remedies such as valerian root.
Valerian, a hardy perennial with sweet smelling pink or white flowers, occurs in many parts of Asia and Europe and now also grows naturally in areas of north America. Other names frequently used for valerian include: garden valerian, and garden heliotrope (no relation to Heliotrope - Heliotropum).
Valerian is also known by various folk names: St. George's Herb, Phu, Sets Wale, All-Heal, Red Valerian, Cat's Valerian, English Valerian, Capon's Trailer, Bloody Butcher, Amantilla, Fragrant Valerian, , and Set Well.
The principal components used for medicinal purposes are the roots, rhizomes (underground stems) and stolons (horizontal stems). Typically harvested in September, the dried roots can be used to brew teas and tinctures, while the dried plant materials usually find their way into capsules or tablets.
There is reference to the use of valerian for medicinal purposes as far back as the time of ancient Greece and Rome. Hippocrates wrote of its therapeutic uses and, in the 2nd century, Galen prescribed valerian for insomnia. The 16th century saw it used to treat headaches, trembling, nervousness, and heart palpitations. In the mid-19th century, many considered valerian a stimulant that stimulated a few of the complaints it was thought to treat and held it in low regard. During The Second World War the English used it for the relief of stress during air raids.
Unlike many other herbal sleep aids, to gain the maximum benefit from valerian it needs to be used on a regular basis, with the full effects appearing slowly and steadily over time.
Results will appear after about a month and regular use promotes natural sleep and deep relaxation. A variety of studies suggest valerian as by far the best natural answer for insomnia and general sleeplessness for many individuals.
Research carried out at the Nestlé Research Laboratories in Switzerland revealed that 450 mg of valerian in an aqueous extract is the optimum dose as an insomnia treatment. A larger dose commonly results in grogginess without any increase in effectiveness, and so care ought to be taken when taking that valerian is a treatment for insomnia.
Furthermore, a double-blind crossover study of 128 subjects conducted in 1982, found valerian root to be not only effective as a sedative for insomnia, but also to be helpful in increasing the overall quality of sleep in the test subjects.
Commonly prescribed as a calming sleep aid, valerian can also play a helpful part in the treatment of anxiety-related sleep problems.
Unlike other frequently prescribed sleep medicines, valerian is not toxic, does not impair your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery and does not enhance the effects of alcohol.
It has been reported that valerian acts as a delayed stimulant for some individuals dependant on body chemistry. In the case of certain metabolic conditions, the effect is one of at first calming you down only to result in a surge of energy several hours later - not an effect desired by individuals interested in using valerian as a nighttime sleep remedy.
Various professional herbalists propose taking fresh valerian root extract as opposed to an extract of dried valerian, as this is less likely to stimulate such a reaction.

Using Rhodiola to Fight Stress and Anxiety

The following article covers a topic - herbal remedies for stress and anxiety- that has recently moved to center stage--at least it seems that way. If you've been thinking you need to know more about it, here's your opportunity.
Rhodiola Rosea is the latest natural remedy to join the arsenal of natural anxiety and stress reducers.
Rhodiola Rosea, also known as Golden Root, is a native plant of arctic Siberia. For centuries it has been used by eastern European and Asian cultures for physical endurance, work productivity, longevity, resistance to high altitude sickness, and to treat fatigue, depression, anemia, impotence, gastrointestinal ailments, infections, and nervous system disorders.
The first recorded medicinal applications of rodia riza (renamed Rhodiola Rosea) was made by the Greek physician, Dioscorides, in 77 C.E. in 'De Materia Medica'. Rhodiola Rosea has been included in official Russian medicine since 1969.
Despite its long history, the Western world has only recently become aware of the health benefits of Rhodiola Rosea. It has come to the attention of many natural health practitioners because of studies which tested its affects on combating anxiety and stress.
Rhodiola Rosea is considered an adaptogen. This means it has an overall stabilizing effect on the body without disrupting other functions. Its ability to normalize hormones may be effective for treating depression and anxiety.
Studies of Rhodiola Rosea show that it stimulates neurotransmitters and enhances their effects on the brain. This includes the ability for the brain to process serotonin which helps the body to adapt to stress.
How can you put a limit on learning more? The next section may contain that one little bit of wisdom that changes everything.
Since adaptogens improve the body's overall ability to handle stress, it has been studied to identify it's effects on biological, chemical and physical stress.
A study was performed to test the effects of Rhodiola Rosea when stress is caused by intense mental work (such as final exams). Such tests concluded that using Rhodiola Rosea improved the amount and quality of work, increasing mental clarity and reducing the effects of fatigue.
The effects of Rhodiola Rosea have also been tested on stress and anxiety from both physical and emotional sources. A report by the American Botanical Council states that "Most users find that it improves their mood, energy level, and mental clarity." They also report on a study that indicated Rhodiola Rosea could increase stress tolerance while at the same time protecting the brain and heart from the physical affects of stress.
This report included details of studies which highlight the overall health benefits of Rhodiola Rosea.
The generally recommended dose is 200-600mg/day. The active properties should be a minimum 0.8 percent salidroside and 3 percent rosavin.
It is important for consumers to know that Rhodiola may be sold using other species that do not share the properties of Rhodiola Rosea, or at ineffective strengths for treatment. Anyone with depression or anxiety should also check with a health professional when treating these symptoms.
The day will come when you can use something you read about here to have a beneficial impact. Then you'll be glad you took the time to learn more about Rhodiola.
Rhodiola is available online from http://www.rhodiola.co.uk

Gout is a painful and sudden illness that can affect joints. It is caused by the accumulation of excess uric acid, which is normally removed through the urine. The crystals of uric acid can then accumulate in joints and cause inflammation and pain. Often patients are not able to get to their healthcare provider right away. If it is a first attack the symptoms can be alarming. Fortunately, it is rarely life threatening and often resolves in a few days even without treatment. However everyone who gets an attack should see their healthcare provider since there are many excellent treatments available. But what can one do while at home?
The home remedy can include NSAID's but you may want to get a diagnosis first since other conditions can cause joint swelling including other forms of arthritis such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Sometimes a joint infection can also look like gout especially if it is hot and red and swollen. If it is quite clear that it is gout, especially if it has affected a joint before, local ice and heat may be applied if comfortable. Taking an NSAID will help as long as the side effects are kept in mind which include stomach ulcer formation and at times high blood pressure. Some examples of NSAIDs are ibuprofen, naproxen and indomethacin.
Recent research has shown that vitamin C lowers uric acid level but whether this means something in patients with gout is not clear.
Avoiding medication that cause gout such as diuretics or "water pills" or adjusting doses after discussing with the healthcare provider can also help.
Decreasing the intake of alcohol is also helpful since alcohol affects the elimination of uric acid. Although the effect of foods that cause gout is only small it must not be forgotten. Meat and seafood are common causes of gout if taken in excess.

Sinus infections are one of the most common infections across the world. Sinus attacks are caused by an infection in the sinuses or cavities that are present in the bones near the nose. When there is any swelling in these sinuses because of some infection, breathing becomes difficult, resulting in fever, headaches, and other discomforts. This is known as sinusitis.
Each sinus or cavity in the skull has an opening that allows free exchange of mucus and air. Each sinus is joined to the other by a mucous membrane lining. When there is an infection like hay fever or a disease like asthma, these sinuses and the lining become inflamed, causing air and mucus to be blocked inside or a vacuum to be created. This can cause pressure on the sinus walls, causing severe pain. Millions of dollars are spent for sinus medications and sinus research.
Sinus infections can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Sometimes, the infection may also lead to some brain infections or other chronic problems. Though there is no effective remedy for sinus infections, a lot of comfort can be gained by treating the sinus symptoms like headaches, nasal discharge, nasal blocking, runny nose, ear/neck/cheek/jaw pain, swelling of eyelids, etc. However, acute or chronic sinus infections require prolonged treatments, comprised of antibiotics or therapies like saline nasal rinses, topical/oral decongestants, antihistamines, mucolytic agents, and intranasal corticosteroids.
Sinus infections can also be treated by some home remedies. A lot of relief can be obtained by inhaling steam from a vaporizer or a bowl of hot water. Applying a hot or a cold compress over the inflamed area would also provide relief. A decoction of mustard seed powder and water, instilled in the nostrils; eating jalapeno peppers; drinking juice of ripe grapes; applying a paste of cinnamon and water on the forehead; applying paste of ginger and water/milk on the forehead; applying paste of basil leaves, cloves, and dried ginger on the forehead; inhaling steam of eucalyptus oil; and drinking warm tea are all found to be effective in providing some relief. Drinking a lot of water and other fluids would also help. A great deal of rest is also required. However, it is better to consult a specialist if the infection persists.

Fleas are the most annoying and troublesome insects for both humans and their pets. While we can use various products to rid ourselves of fleas, old-fashioned, preventative home remedies relieve us of ever having to have them in the first place.
Various techniques and products are available in the market to get rid of these fleas, but we don't often get the expected results. Even if we do manage to rid ourselves of the scourge of fleas, this is often not long-lasting or accompanied by side-effects. For example, the use of prednisone and corticosteroid drugs helps to give relief from flea bites, but at the same time, weakens the immune system. Similarly, chemicals containing poisons are often successful in killing fleas, but they are unsafe on pets in the long term. Keeping all these factors in mind, it is best to use home remedies to get rid of these annoying creatures.
To prevent fleas, keep your home clean, indoors and outdoors! All the carpets and floors, and all the corners of the house should be thoroughly vacuumed regularly. The kitchen should be cleaned properly, cleaning up food spills and covering all food stuff. A clean home is an unattractive one to fleas! Water is also a breeding place for fleas, so all the leaky pipes should be promptly repaired. In case you need to use pesticides, the natural, less harmful ones, should be used. Placing herbs like bay leaves, coriander, dill, lemon peel, or clove in pantry shelves, or in stored grain has proved to be effective in keeping fleas away.
Also, giving the pets diets rich in essential fatty acids (EFA) strengthens their immune system and makes them less attractive to fleas. It is important to keep pets and their bedding clean by washing them regularly. Following these simple steps can easily free us from the trouble of fleas.

Korean ginseng is more stimulating and increases the "yang" energy, while American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) increases the "yin" energy. Korean ginseng is considered most suitable for males and for older people.
Russian scientists claim that Siberian ginseng aids in memory, stamina and endurance. Siberian ginseng is a staple of athlete's and production workers.
Siberian ginseng contains remarkable compounds that favorably affect the adrenal glands, the small glands that rest atop the kidneys and secrete stress-fighting hormones. Taking the herb is believed to boost the body's capacity to handle physical stresses ranging from heat exposure to extreme exertion. Resistance to disease increases as well. So does one's overall energy level.
All forms of ginseng are said to aid in reducing stress, improving vitality and boosting the immune system. Oriental ginseng, whether white or red, is often taken as a daily tonic with the added benefit of an energy boost.

With the plethora of pharmacological products on the market today, one could be forgiven for thinking that they are a panacea for all illnesses. However, this is largely hype as Western medicines, for the most part, suppress and mask symptoms. They don't reach the root of the problems.
This also applies to the many artificial vitamin products you are confronted with every time you go into mainstream pharmacists or even health food stores, which should know better. Very often these vitamins can't be absorbed directly and need a medium to allow them to work effectively.
However, you will be pleased to know that all is not lost. Nature has provided a remedy for all ailments, most notably in the form of herbs. Herbs are the dried parts of various plants including shrubs, trees, flowers and ferns.
Containing many powerful natural ingredients, they actually aid the body to heal itself. The body is equipped with a self-regulating system which will keep the organism is a state of balanced health. However, you do need to de-toxify first.
All herbs contain one or more active ingredient such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes and essential oils. Naturally non-toxic, herbs can be taken singly, or in combination. It is especially this non-toxicity which makes them safe and effective to use to treat many different conditions and ailments.
Herbs have a gentle, but deep-reaching affect on the body. Rather than suppressing symptoms, as Western medicines do, herbs restore the natural balance of the body. They tone the body's organs and glands, supplying the body with many vitamins and nutrients. This process helps the body to rid itself of the harmful toxic accumulations built up through a lifetime of wrong living. Once free of impurities, the body can begin to regain its natural strength, which allows our natural internal healing processes to begin to restore the body's natural level of equilibrium.
However, though non-toxic, herbs are very powerful and it is advisable to consult a qualified herbal practitioner before embarking on a course of treatment. The Chinese are still practitioners of herbal medicine, try consulting one of their admirable pharmacists or herbalists.
Herbs are but one of several natural remedies. Homeopathy is another admirable discipline, which is extremely efficacious. The homoeopathists gradually distil their remedies in a style reminiscent of alchemists. The final product is virtually impossible to see, but extremely powerful and effective.
Naturopathy is another natural remedy, but dispenses with virtually all medicines, preferring to use the power of psychology to work its effects.
Last, but not least is a natural fruit diet, which, by the natural enzymes present in the fruit, de-toxifies whilst still providing the body with many necessary vitamins. One of the most important vitamins which need to be refreshed daily, especially if you smoke or drink coffee, is vitamin C. Citric fruits are an excellent course of vitamin C. Fruit juices, especially, those produced naturally, can be one of the main components of a fruit diet.
